I think we are planning on 6/27-6/29 (last weekend in June).

Yup, Last weekend in June is what I've been planning on. At this point, how many are planning to make it? I'd like to see as many as possible from ONS. :steer: I think there are a couple of local cruiser guys/mud members that would like to join us as well.

Also, I don't want to have the only 40 series on this trip. :D Anybody thinkin' about bringing theirs? [I know, I know...4 dollars a gallon:frown:]

I'm planning to float the James river at some point over the three day weekend. If you're able to take Friday off and get up here by around mid day, I was thinking it might be good to start off the trip with a nice relaxing river float/fish after the drive up. We could then go on to set up camp Friday evening, socialize/grill/, get a good nights rest, and go out to wheel Sat. morning. Sunday could be open for wheeling, fishing, or just packing up, as it suits you. How does that sound ? I'm open to suggestions.

Or....we could Just setup camp on Friday and do the river float on Sunday.

I'll leave the Raleigh area around 9am that Friday morning, Definitely want to do the river trip - and the rest of the plan sounds perfectly fine to me! (I can leave earlier if needed, just hate dealing with the traffic around here.)

I'm planning to head up Friday morning. Not sure what time, but I think I'd try to leave at 8 or 9am. Seems like a good idea to do the river stuff on Friday afternoon and start wheeling on Saturday.

We also need to figure out where we will camp so we can claim sites before heading to the river on Friday.

I like the idea of wheeling Saturday and a little Sunday morning before heading home. Hopefully Hanna will be able to get my sliders done in time for the trip...

Hey guys...I'll be there for sure. Trying to get my dad (the old guy who came to the first meeting with me) to bring his new 40, but he may be riding with me. Looking forward to my first TLCA ride.

I was really looking forward to this ride for the past month or so...fortunately/unfortunately I remembered that this ride is the same weekend of my wife's bday (28th).

Needless to say, I won't be making the trip. I was really looking forward to the highlands, it'll have to be another time. Hopefully Scott will have us back soon!

Yall have fun and post up some pics!

Alright sorry for the delay on details! It's been baby, baby, baby, around here the past couple of weeks. :D

Campground: Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort

Of course, I'm not in the habit of camping near home, so I wanted to do a little research to find the best choice for us that I could. This one looks nice. It's very close to the wheeling trails, and looks like a beautiful spot with bathrooms, showers, etc. . It has stocked trout ponds! No license needed for these. Pay for what you keep. I talked to them this morning. I asked about availability for the 27-29th. I told her that we may have 8-12, or maybe more, and she said that's not a problem, but of course to reserve as quickly as we're able to. $24 a day per site, two day minimum on the weekend, two people per site, 3 dollars per extra person. There is a 20% discount for groups of 8 or more campsites, so we should reserve as a group if we can. Maybe I could just tell her anyone reserving for the "land cruiser club" is part of our group and we can call individually.

I'd like to get a head count of those that are definitely going to make it at this point, and also those that would like to, but are still uncertain.

The size of the group and arrival times may determine how I schedule activities. Let me know exactly what your plans are as far as your departure time from NC so I can decide on the most appropriate meeting place for the group. The James river rafting location will be a bit of a hike from the camping and wheeling site. Approx. 40-45 minute drive. [scenic country roads] I'd like to see the whole group join the river float, so if some of you won't be able to make it until Friday evening, perhaps we should go straight to the campsite Friday??

Questions? Suggestions? Concerns?

Hey Scott, I will be leaving Raleigh Friday morning and anticipate being in your neighborhood around noon or 1pm. That campground looks very nice, I am fine with it. I'd be happy to split a site w/ someone, I'll be sleeping in my truck.

This is merely a suggestion: maybe set up a rally point Friday 2pm or so, go run some trails, head to the campground for dinner, beers, lies and wait on the rest of the crew. Ride trails Saturday. River float Sunday morning, then people can head their separate ways?

I think that sounds about right Joe.

I think the NFS campsites are the way to go. You get tent pads, picnic tables, bathrooms, etc. for $15/night.

Last weekend in June (27-29, Fri-Sun) should be fine for me. It gives me additional time to hopefully get my sliders built, shipped, and installed.

I'm sorry Clint, I forgot that you mentioned that! There is also a NFS campground in the same immediate area. Either one is fine with me. :) I don't believe that you can make reservations. [first come first serve] I've heard that they're both nice. Glenwood & Pedlar Ranger Districts - Sherando Lake Recreation Area

I'll be there Friday with my family (including the dog this time). Montebello is fine with me, plus it's nice that it has the lake. The kids will enjoy that.

I'm fine with the river float on Sunday. Are we talking canoes, tubes, or? Depending on how rough the river is, I may not be able to float because of the kids.

Most people just take tubes and have a relaxing float. If you'd like to fish, kayaks are ideal. You can rent kayaks, tubes, or canoes here James River Reeling & Rafting - Home Page, or bring your own. It's a pretty lazy current for the most part. There are "shoots" of mild rapids, But you can easily avoid them, if you don't want to go through them....... I can't remember your kids ages. Can they swim?

I'll talk with the better half, but I bet we'll go with renting tubes. It shouldn't be a problem and we'll also bring vests for the kids (2 & 5).

I'll go ahead and call Montebello in the morning to rent a site. I guess we're going with tent sites and not the rv sites. I'm not sure where we park for the tent sites, but if North is up on the site map, there are tent sites on the East side of the pond and North of the rv sites. We may be able to park next to the tents at the overlook area and it is closer to the comfort station.

Anyone have thoughts on meals for the evenings? My wife has volunteered to make an enchilada casserole (or something else) for the group either Friday or Saturday. She will prep it at home and we can haul it in a cooler. We just need a rough idea how many to feed. Looks like at least 11.
