my truck should be paid for in 4 months. I had already planned on squirel caging some bucks so i could rebuild the motor and make it a 4.7. THen i'm going to drop a turbo on it! Big plans....just need to save a few bucks first. BUt i am very serious.

nahh, want to keep the inline tractor motor and keep it as stock as possible. I know doing all this is not stock, but the motor will still be an FZFE. Just going to hop it up a bit. I'm kind of lucky in the fact that i work on the weekends at a NASCAR race shop. Got to be pretty good friends with some really top notch engine builders. I should have some professional assistance when i undertake this. Plus, i figure the motor has 158,000 miles on it now, but the time i get ready to do this it should have around 175 or so. Close to time for a rebuild anyways. I just hope the HG stays until then.
Well, folks, I think the question is answered; only two to three people here indicated they were serious about safari turbo systems. Since MUD slightly overlaps other organizations like TLCA, Rising Sun, HDCruisers etc, in terms of members here who are members elsewhere as well, I think its probably a waste of time to try to round up 25 buyers. I can also more fully understand why MAF and other outfits are hesitant to invest and wait. So, if anyone wants to know how sweet a turbocharged intercooled 80 is, you are welcome to ask, and I'll tell ya! Or, better yet, come up and teach me to rockcrawl, and I'll teach you how to streetrace an 80!
Yeah, I'd also like to see just how many people actually have the Kazuma/TRD s/c. These big ticket items just seem to be too much all at once for most people. I don't know anyone that would say "hey I didn't really like all that extra power" if they drove a stock setup, then a s/c'd one, then a turbo'd one. But back when you could actually buy all of them the s/c was going for over $2500 and the turbo for $5000. Now even the s/c is going to be over $3K if you do it properly.
The one option I'd tell folks to pursue if they are dead serious about getting a turbo though is to contact someone in AUS. As most folks know, the Aussie's tended to slap the turbo on when the truck was brand new. Now several 80s from that time period are being sold, parted out or wrecked and the turbo system can be pulled - used of course. But once in hand most of the stuff is relatively common and sourced from other manufacturers. In fact a good fabricator can do it pretty easily. The manifold is really the only part that would be difficult but I know Robbie got the one custom bent one from a firm out here in CA so they can be had. Personally I'm not convinced the one that Safari uses just isn't from another Toyota motor. At any rate I could babble on about this but the trickle down from the fast-n-furious crowd has made doing it a lot easier. Oh, and as was noted in another thread the Uni-Chip can be bought, installed and tuned here in the states too. If you check APS's website for US distributors/dealers you can find one that will do exactly that on a 4-wheel dyno and then set up the uni-chip for you. That's what I did and found one 8 miles away.
More importantly though is that these are totally not necessary to enjoy the truck especially to wheel it. But merging into traffic from the onramp of I-15 into a bunch of LA jerks on their way to Vegas...well...
Have tried speaking with safari, as they have 3 x 105 series 4.5 turbo kits in stock currently, and after 17 calls not returned trying to secure these kits, I have given up on them.
I wouldnt like your chances of securing 25 units, even if you got the orders, as safari seems to be doing way more bling bling wrx etc stuff these days, and 4wd stuff is limited to new for middle east market.
Im thinkin to get the AVO Turbo, but i have 3 questions from all you folks
I have '97 LX450 with 160K miles on it.
1) How much cost the AVO turbo with the installations?
2) Do i really need major rebuild on my motor?
3) With that Turbo will my vehicle pass the State Smog Check? Well gotta remember this truck orignally came without the Turbo.
1. We are hearing about the AVO turbo for the first time in this thread. I don't believe anyone on this forum has purchased and/or installed one of these units. We have a few guys with the Safari turbo.
2. That's your decision. Some engines are tired at 160k. Some are in great condition. It depends on the engine's history. Do a leak-down and compression check. Does it have a new HG?
3. I can't answer that but you'll have to tell us the state before anyone can give an opinion.
The other day i called SleeOffRoad.com and according to what they said it would be better
rebuild my motor 1st ( considering i have 160K ~ right now )
Cost to rebuild my motor is about $8K and the car will have to stay for 3weeks.
Well i had her since she was virgin back then (97LX450) so far my motor still damn good
i always warmin up before i drive & also treat her really nice with all Mobil 1 Synthetics
(Gear Oil , Motor Oil & Trans Fluids) I havent done compression test yet, but everytime i warm up the car i still can see water drip~ from the exhaust tip.
Now $8K to rebuild just the motor sounds lil over too much? and im very serious to get the AVO Turbo.
But on the other hand just sure and unsure whether with all the Turbo application will pass smog check in Southern California.
By the way whats the Turbo lag on that AVO turbo? 3k rpm and above or less?
$8k rebuild plus $8K+ for the AVO Turbo. The thing will not pass smog in California. You might as well swap in a 93+ Supra Turbo motor for more potential.
Since you're in the PRK you probably want to go with the TRD Supercharger instead of a turbo. The emissions regulations where you live are the most asinine in the world. If you've owned the vehicle since new, always used M1, know the engine's history, have the compression checked, rebuild the injectors, and do a good tune with the S/C install then you'll probably be OK.
Everyone should consider doing a HG at the same time that they introduce forced induction on an 8 yo engine with over 100k miles.
Its not the speed freak that im looking for thou, Supra is totally different category here
Dont get me wrong i like the speed too i used to owned '94 Supra TT but not anymore.
Anyways, what i need is let says someones with the big egos Range Rover HSE /Vogue tuned,Cayenne Turbo or the New Ford Expedition'05 supercharged, hey Sh&*@!z at least i give face when turnout to be ~> you what i mean?
Thanks for you to talk to me into the S/C, i dont really like supercharged because theres no lag , open in all rpm. For race yeah u dont want lag, but for daily commute work & traffic jams cmon.. i think i still choose the Turbo thou.
