Buy an ultragauge or scangauge to pull the codes. You'll want to have one anyway since they provide a lot of engine info like water temp.

I'm sure it's more along the line of the CARB board does not want people clearing codes prior to inspection. CA is draconian in their Air laws - they are happier to take 1PPM of CO2 out of the air than save 100 jobs. I hate California.

it shows up if it's recently been cleared.... even the third world states that have inspection make you come back if you've cleared your code(s) since 200 miles.
And it appears they can still be owned.... just not loaned....?

After a trip down south to SCarolinaFZJ80, now located in SD, we hooked up his code reader and out came this... "P0402: EGR Flow excessive detected". So I searched the code on the this site and found the "code list" Beno was kind enough to post. Trouble Areas: EGR valve stuck open; EGR VSV open malfunction; open in VSV circuit for EGR; short in EGR gas temp. sensor circuit; ECM.
The really interesting part to this story was prior to driving south, SCarolinaFZJ80 asked me to pick up a part from the local stealership and I agreed. While I was there I asked a service dept employee how much it was to pull the code my CEL was throwing. He told me I needed to "pull around the corner to speak to a service adviser". Now you have to realized this place, Toyota Carlsbad Service Dept., is freaking huge. Probably the biggest in the country, but I really don't know. Anyway, I pull around and some kid eye f'n my rig asked me to get out and puts plastic on my seat and a paper floor mat while a service adviser starts asking me for my information. I felt like I was being hijacked, it was crazy! So I slow everyone down... "woah woah, I just want to ask a question.. how much to read the code my CEL is throwing???" She replies to me "$99." At the same time I'm pulling the plastic off my seat and wading up the paper floor mat I reply "No thanks, I'm out!"
So after making a short story long... I'm headed to SD Trux and this site has saved me over $500 in 2 weeks. This is why I'm a silver star member and you should be too!

what they would have made on my with that outrageous charge fails in comparison with what they COULD have made while ordering parts from them in the future. A "Service Adviser" on commission isn't really looking out for your best interests, especially when they have quotas. I'm just sayin...

wow, you probably need some maintenance, but you can buy a scangauge for that. I think there may be a write up on a gauge install and the prices actually.

Im frankly not surprised. I have had (prior to my Cruiser education and subsequent purchase of a Scanguage II) a couple of times been charged an Hour's labor to "hook it up to the machine" to pull a code on my cruiser and on my old Tahoe. Highway robbery, but alas, a common practice.

If money were no object and you wanted to get more power / acceleration out of your FZJ80 would you 1. supercharge 2. gears 3. both and run it hard till it blows then drop an LS1 in it 4. your dream powertrain set up.
Keep in mind I'm Baja bound so I won't be doing much rock climbing but will be running from banditos through wash board and salt flats!
