Looking at this 2016 LC that is a WI/IL truck. Rust is a concern and the dealer snapped this pics.

Is this rust normal or should I pass? I live in WI so I know rust will always be a worry.

Since you live in WI, don’t worry about it. If the truck checks out otherwise, get it, clean it up, and enjoy it. Lots of good info on Mud about cleaning up rust and what I see there is easily salvageable.

Too much rust for my taste. Too much rust for the $$$. At that price point, you're better off buying a clean, dry truck.

Some will say that rust is no big deal but I say that's too much rust for a 3 year old truck.

I agree that is easily salvageable but why pay 60k for rust? Better to get a clean starting point and have it undercoated.

Rust looks normal for the NE and I've heard its the about the same out there. For those of us that don't live in the desert that is just surface stuff and easy to deal with but you might be able to heckle the price a bit. Even if you purchase a new one or an old one from the desert you know you will have to have it undercoated immediately to prevent salt rust if you live in an area where they salt/brine the roads. And depending on the undercoating put a fresh coat on every year or at least maintain the worn areas. But that's any vehicle around these parts if you want to keep it 15+ years. Most folks don't own a vehicle for more than 5 years.

The undercarriage looked mild, but the bit around the front suspension looked much worse that surface to me...

Good Lord. You can get a brand new LC for $75k. Who is paying $60k for a used one.

Ya...that was my point.
That rusty unit is priced at $60k.
If I’m paying $60k for used, it had better be darn near perfect...

All of the low mileage (below 30,000 miles) 16+ LCs on Autotrader are 60 and above.

If it were me, I would take a well-maintained-but-higher-miles truck...than this. Looks pretty deep to me. Smooth surfaces aren’t where rust is problematic. It other bolts points are like this (see crop image)....no thanks. Also makes me wonder what else is lurking behind/above the plastic skids.z. KDSS valves...other stuff?

I agree. I've seen California 08/09 200s on here that look substantially cleaner than that.

Rust never sleeps... it's a lot easier to prevent it before it happens.

Your KDSS is likely to be a nightmare. That is more than enough to turn me off. The pitting up front is in the severe category and replacing the joints is going to suck. Everything is going to have to be torched-cut off. I paid 46k for a rust free 16. I then went over it with LPS3 to stop any future rust.

Autotrader and Carmax can help inform your thinking, but look at TX-AZ-CA for decent rigs, you can find what you want.

The rust in the photos is minimal and easily dealt with. I'd ask the dealer to drop the spare tire, and send you photos of that area, with a focus on both frame corners, rear axle & diff, suspension, etc.

I can't speak to the value you'd be getting with that particular car/price - there are a multitude of factors that play into that. The rust above wouldn't stop me from buying the vehicle, but if a cleaner one was available for a similar price, I'd definitely go for the cleaner one.

Also a warning about undercoatings (as recommended above): many of them will serve to trap water between the coating and the metal, and actually expedite the rusting process (even if it's not "visible" under the undercoating). Before having anything applied, do some research and know what you're getting; there are many different options, and they are not all made equal.
