Truck occasionally kicks in and out of overdrive. Previous owner seems to remember a toyota mechanic telling him there was some senson in/on/or dealing with the transmission that would cause this. He uses the term "heat sensor". Is there such a sensor? This was a while ago, long before I bought it so he may not remember exactly what the guy told him. Any other ideas why it would do this? When it's in overdrive it seems to drive well and cruises right along. Then suddenly bam 4th gear, revving really high, sometimes for a second, sometimes a minute, then kicks back into overdrive. Any help is appreciated. Sorry for the amateur beginning questions.

Thanks,

Matt

If I remember correctly, the issue you are having is related to the temperature sensor or the thermostat. Something to do with not letting the truck be in OD if the engine isn't warm. Somehow the trans ECU thinks the truck is still warming up.

Is there a code for that?

My guess is something else. But I don't want to bring the rain cloud....:D

where is the temperature sensor located? Is it something a one banana beginner mechanic like myself could fix? How much is a new sensor? Is it something I could also get from a junkyard or worthwhile rather? Thanks for the help so far. Exactly what I was looking for. That is the sensor the guy at toyota told him it was a while back when he took it in. Hopefully thats it as opposed to the "rain cloud" ;)

Thanks guys

Matt

Does the autos use the Temp Coolant Sensor for this reading? If so, quite an easy job to replace.

Just need the confirmation that the automatic/22re's use this same sensor.

anyone on where the sensor is and if I would able to replace it? Can I get it from a junkyard or is it cheap to buy new? Lemme know oh masters of the minitruck.

Thanks

Matt

k thanks I'll take a look. Since I'm such a beginning mechanic thought maybe helpful to get some live reassurance from others that know their trucks inside and out. I will check out the FSM and hopefully figure it out. Thanks for the link.

sounds like your going to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor. it is for the ecu only.

there are 3 sensors

the one you want to play with is on the passenger side, part of the intake manifold. there are two sensors with the plugs facing forward the same way.

the one you want is closest to the engine.

it has 2 prongs.

next to it, towards the out side, is the cold start injector coolant temperature sensor. this is for the cold start injector only.

the third is located in the center of the intake manifold installed vertically, and its a single wire. that is the coolant temp sensor for the gauge only.

thanks so much. I will give it a look tomorrow afternoon. Sorry for so many questions but sometimes it helps to have that exact explanation like you just gave. It took you probably more time than it should have but it really helped me out. After 250/1045 pages of the FSM and reading about many different sensors its nice to have some reassurance. Search is nice, and FSM is nice, but having a few guys that know exactly wtf they're talkin about helps a lot. Seems like a real easy job now.

Thanks again I appreciate it.

Thanks to my buddy Aaron aka Wristy the truck is running A LOT better. The little 30 sec vid helped out a ton. Got the old engine coolant temp sensor off, got the new one on, refilled the coolant and ding ding ding.... no more check engine light. During my first test drive, no stalling, and no dropping out of overdrive at highway speeds. Only took it on the one test drive but from everything I can tell it's all fixed for now.

Thanks so much, even the smallest tips help someone who doesn't know what they're lookin at. I am learning.

 for Wristy. How's that book report comin!!!
