I have a 1973 pig with power brakes and the original booster. There is a major vacuum leak coming from under the dash that goes away when the brake pedal is pushed. I'm not paying the 300-500 that they go for new! Has anyone ever rebuilt one. I realize that some people will freak out about my safety but they have to be rebuildable and if it does fail I would only lose power assist. So keep your panties on!

Thank you for the lesson. I have now learned my search thoroughly before asking lesson. I also appreciate that it was not accompanied by snide demeaning remarks!

Hey, man.

I'm learning too, and those were saved when I approached a similar question, so copied and pasted to here.

By no means am I one to condemn for asking a question, or lack off GoogleFu, since I'm in the same boat. Plus, this isn't the 80 forum and the only person allowed to give anyone chit is nuclearlemon, since she's earned the right. Hahaha.

Edited: In all honesty, I've found Google to be a superior search tool.

Type in whatever followed by FJ55 and IH8MUD threads result, along with an option to search for more on Ih8mud.

Usually gets me every thread, that has links to others, and good for an hours entertainment.

Currently doing the same thing on hinge repair and have found two threads on Mud app, but twelve using Google.

As quoted... no new problems... only new audiences....

Just an update on my booster. I decide to take it apart. Luckily I read a previous thread on it and marked the alignment of parts and used a couple of clamps to hold it together before releasing the big round clamp. Inside is ridiculously simple and it blows my mind that places can charge so much for them or for rebuilding them. Turns out the seal on the pedal side was dry. It is like a hand bike pump (old one with the leather cup) and if it drys out, will not seal properly. I cleaned everything up and lubed the slide and presto! No more hissing.

Now I know this is temporary but it will get me by until I can get a disc set up or afford to rebuild my booster.

It is a shame they don't sell parts for rebuilding the booster though because it is pretty darn easy to tear down and put back together... Correctly!

I hear the lability thing if we were talking about master cylinders. If that fails you hit something. Your booster fails you just push the brakes harder. I can rebuild my master cylinder so why not a booster?
