Is smoke normal?

if you are going to pull the head then you could open up a whole new set of concerns...
cheers

Isn't that the truth. Anyway it looks like there is pitting into the intake valves even though it's not as bad as the exhaust. just curious did you run the engine with the valve cover off to see what kind of flow you were getting to the rocker? might switch up to a lighter oil for startup. I run 5-40 rotella syn.

Good luck alex.

might try running the engine with some cleaner to remove a buch of the build up.

I swear by that gunk engine flush for every oil change. Some of the nastiest crap you ever saw comes out with that stuff. Its pretty cheap at $4 a pop. I had a subaru with stickey lifter issues and it got rid of the problem first try. Think of all those oil passages that never get cleaned and there could lie half of your problem. You may have hardened arteries, just flush it.

If you are worried about the smoke find someone with a fuel dilution(Gerrin) test kit and check your oil. If fuel can get down then oil can get up.

Wes,

Well, never did run the engine with the valve cover off. I bought it with 113Km on her in 92 in Montreal. I guess the sludge is the result of a very poor maintenance before I bought it. I alwayes use either Castrol 15W40 or Rotella 15W40, but not syntetic.

I guess, I will not going to pull the head for now, I will replace the bad rockers, flush the engine a few times and see what happens. I will not be replacing the valve seals, save them for later. Also, I ordered the valve grind kit (the part number you gave me) from CruiserDan, was $189.00 and no shipping charges.

Speaking of which brand of engine flush should I use, any suggestions?????

Thanks,
Alex

a litre of auto tranny fluid works very well also...
cheers

do you mean adding before the oil change to stir things up, or adding in at the time of filling? And running with it for the interval of the oil life.

Any worries something might get stirred up on a old engine and get stuck in passage? or not provide enough lubrication?

I remember reading about folks pouring ATF into a tank of diesel to help keep the injectors clean. I dunno if that is snake oil or what. ATF seems to be usefully for everything ;)

i have heard of that also but never tried it...
a litre of kerosene helps with the peformance as well...

I thought the guys dumping ATF into the fuel were doing it for lubrication purposes?

I don't know if i trust my injectors to the ATF it seems like a pretty expensive mistake to make. Wouldn't it f -up your filter. I'm sure the detergent properties would totally screw any one with a racor or other coelescer type filter.I think the ATF in the fuel is just asking for trouble.

As for kerosene. I believe that would lower the flashpoint of the fuel so be careful how much you add i'm sure a litre isn't bad but some people might read better performance and start pouring it in there.
The performance increase would come at a high price called heat. She'd go faster, faster, but she'd get hot hot. Could also cause premature ignition which is hard on those lower bearings and worse on your valves. :frown:

explain why you feel that auto fluid would plug the filters... something just isn't regeristing here for me...
as for any additive, be it kerosene, propane, nitros, it is common sense to use moderation...

Detergent has a negative effect on some coelescer type filters. It plugs them up and reduces their ability to seperate the water from the fuel. The regular filter maybe become full of all the crap between the tank and itself which is good i suppose just be aware that the filter will require changing more frequently.

I understand moderation with the kerosene and meant no offence just that some people read PERFORMANCE and think more will=higher performance.
