Yep, sometimes it's good to just shoot a computer!
I've figured out some things on the backfire. I'm still out of town working, so I had my mechanic at my shop pull the head today. I haven't seen it but he said there are at least 4, or possibly 5 or 6 burned valves, both intake and exhaust. Also, the cylinders show ring wear at the top groove; he can feel it which tells me that it's at least .003 - .004". Definitely a valve job is in her near future, and most likely, I'll just go ahead and do a major overhaul. It's not a difficult engine to rebuild (I've done 3), it's fairly cheap, and then I'll know exactly what I have.
So now I need some feedback: I'll shave the head a small amount, maybe .020", add seals to the valve guides, bore it if necessary to whatever, hopefully no more than .020", and grind the crank if it needs it. Anyone out there running chrome rings? I've had good luck with them on low rpm engines but unsure for this app.
Not trying to build a dragster, just a good strong power horse.
I welcome any suggestions, opinions, comments and feedback
