Hey All,
My name is JJ, and I recently inherited a project 1979 FJ40! Someone recommended I create an account and post here, as it’s a wonderful resource and community.

A little bit about my FJ40:
In 2024 my dad and I split the cost of a local Facebook listing for a FJ40, the seller had already removed the cab and redid the frame, so we bought it as a roller. We found what I believe is a Japanese reproduction unibody of a FJ40 and road tripped together to pick it up, with a plan in place to finish any mechanical work then basically drop the cab on the frame and complete the vehicle. It’s got the original 2F engine and 4 speed manual transmission.

Unfortunately in mid 2025, my father was diagnosed with Leukemia related to 9/11 as a first responder, so this project took an abrupt pause. He passed shortly later, and thus I’ve inherited the project and am completely determined to finish it and hold on to it forever. Since then, I’ve been able to work on it with the help of his best friends.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to getting this project back on track and completed by the end of this year. With the help of his two best friends, we’ve gotten it started and running, and are now focused on finishing electrical work, installation of a digital dash, and a EFI system.

Any advice on places to buy parts (or avoid) would be greatly appreciated! I’m currently on the hunt for some fuel tank straps…

I’ve attached some progress photos for anyone interested.

Thanks!

Welcome! Good way to honor your dad with finishing the build! Im working on a ‘79 thats 99% original if you need some pics for reference. Good parts sources are cool cruisers of Texas, City racer llc, Cruiser outfitters, Cruiser Corps, and a slurry of other great vendors.
