Hello members.

Noobie to the forum. I just picked up a mostly tastefully modified 1973 FJ40, January edition.

Currently, it is sporting odd aftermarket gauges, front disc brakes from some form of later -40 swap, AC, a soft top, a four speed, a Christmas Eve 1979 2F with a poorly performing 32 36 Weber and what I think at this point is a FJ80 distributor.

I will be working on resolving a multitude of sins on this thing to get it in reliable operation.

Last Toyota was a 1995 4WD ext cab Hi-Lux V6 5 speed that I owned from 1996 to 2012, and about 280k miles.

Welcome to the ‘73 club! It was a transition year and you have to be careful when ordering parts. Some parts are one year only like the reverse light.

Post up some pictures!

Teaser photos…

Does that distributor cap help narrow down what distributor might have been slammed in the hole?

The PO didn’t put it in but told me he was having a hard time finding a cap.

I have quite a few parts to track down. This cap and/or distributor though, it’s been too long since I was around these things on a regular basis.

The history of what parts were swapped with what were lost a couple of owners ago.

Never saw a cap that look like that. 2 vent holes? One to let water in and the other to let it out!

There is/was a guy here that cast some 73 reverse light lenes - Its like 1000 bucks for OEM, makes the $150 Darth Vader hood seem like a deal.

That looks to be either a small cap dizzy from 1979 fj40 or a big cap dizzy from an fj60. Take a picture of the igniter + coil that is sitting near it mounted to the fender. Might help narrow it down.

Those vent holes on the cap are routed to cab firewall (vented inside) and an port on the air cleaner for air intake. You probably have neither of those destinations on this truck ... which is why they are open to the atmosphere. That type of dizzy is supposed to be water tight which is why they had this complicated routing for air. Yours is not water tight ;-)

Edit: My best guess right now is thats a small cap from 1979. I don't see that your push rod cover is dented which is required for the big cap dizzy.
;-)

Unfortunately, or fortunately, no backup light. Right now I would call it one less thing to get working.

I wired in a 40W LED IP68 light with a switch below the dash. It will do amber, white or flashing either - very bright. Amber is very nice on white/ice snow floor. I back into my place every time I come home, 300 yards.
