Understand the IG SW. Is key!
The IG SW, has a steering wheel lock. When IG key removed, steering lock is set. Lock does not actual engage, unless steering wheel turned. Often times steering wheel is turned, when used as handle exiting or entering vehicle. Thus, locking steering wheel, put pressure against the IG SW lock. It basically the tension created by the tire rubber twisting on the ground. We just need to turn the steering wheel, to release pressure and IG key then turns freely. One way steering will not turn, just stops, hitting lock. The other way steering wheel will turn. Not understanding this function, and forcing IG key to turn. Bust the rod and or key.
Also note: Look at ring around IG SW. Is says: PUSH. Most just don't realize they are pushing when using key. We do need to lightly push as we turn key in IG SW.
Understanding IG steering wheel lock and releasing pressure of lock and push to turn. But still needing to fiddle with IG key to switch to ON or OFF:
The tumbler lock pins may be dirty. I've plastic safe spray cleaner & lube by CRC. I spray in IG SW to clean on lube. I insert key and remove, then clean key. I also use compressed air at times. One can also remove IG SW tumble ASSY, and clean outside of IG SW housing. Actual easy, with working key and pin, with lower plastic knee cover removed.
Poorly cut or worn IG key can also be issue. I like having, new OEM keys cut to VIN #. I do this at Dealership, with proof of ownership.
If after all above understand and completed, you still have same issue. This could be grim deeper in works of IG SW or damage component. This may require pulling the whole IG ASSY. But not something I've run into. Search forum for help, if that the case.
