would like to see the newer smoother emblems with similar font to the oem toyota found on fj40's, similar to treeroots rig in silver font. Would love to see some pics of the actual end product.

Edit: like this one in attached pic, but with pewter/silver color. If it was smooth and well made I would buy it.

I do have "silver" but in reality it looks more gray then a metallic silver. You can see that color in the original pics. There is a company out there getting ready to release a line a metallic looking filament that supposedly looks like chrome, and gold, and a few other colors but the supposed prices are insane on the filament. Right now I have an emblem on the printer doing a higher quality "finished" print. I will do an FJ40 "toyota" emblem as soon as this print is done. Understand that the FJ40 print will take almost 25 hours so I wont have pics ready until tomorrow afternoon. The more modern FJ "Toyota" emblem in the first pics IS done in the higher setting. If you look closely you will see it is quite a bit smoother than any other prints in the pics.

Here's a black and chrome finish similar to what you are talking about. I will do my best to track down some actual metallic looking filament for a somewhat affordable price. Usually in the 3-D printing world as soon as someone comes out with something new like a new type or color filament then all the other manufacturers release their version within a month or two for WAY less. Hopefully that will happen with the metallic looking filament.

the stock pewter is more of a gray actually, do you have an up close pic of the emblem in the pic that I posted?

The FJ40 font emblem in the pics is in the lower quality setting. I can take close up pics of it, but it is a little rougher then the one I will start printing today.

Ok, so I just spent the last few hours working on tracking down a metallic silverish PLA to use for the letters. I have had a few requests to get the letters to have a metallic look. I finally found a co. here in Socal (matterhackers) that has a PRO series sliver that is VERY close to a metallic finish. As close as I will be able to get. It will have a machined look to it and not a "chrome" polished look. I personally think that will look best anyways. I ordered it and paid for the 2 day express shipping. I plan to print one in the highest setting with the silver letters and will post a set of detailed pics of it. I'm going to hold off on the FJ40 font emblem print until I have the silver filament, which should be Saturday. If anyone is still interested in any emblem I have shown or talked about please post up on here. I really need an accurate assessment on the actual interest from this forum. I am not asking anyone to commit to anything. Just a show of interest and be specific on which one you like.

Do you have an idea of the pricing for the "80" and "Toyota" emblems in this new metallic finish? I'm interested in either one of these..

Coming from the manufacturing side of things I'm wondering why you would "print" something like this?

These emblems should be 3D machined and polished or investment cast from a material that will hold up outdoors.

The idea's great, but 3D printing is pretty much never, ever the way to make a finished product.

As much as I hate Haas I would buy a little super mini for making stuff like this and some good CAM.

But this guy already does it....

I'm not sure how positive or helpful that comment was, but I guess I have to respond to it anyways. You should understand that I'm printing plastic to replace plastic parts (the OEM emblems). Our 80's are covered in plastic inside and out. Who ever said plastic couldn't handle the outdoors. The plastics I'm using are thicker and designed to last a LOT longer then the plastics Toyota used in the mid 90's on their cars. Going with machined metal parts for a grille emblem is just a tad overkill and way too expensive for a non functional upgrade. Doing a one off custom machined piece would be 3-4 times the cost and I would have to spend many thousands of dollars in machinery and for what? So I could have metal emblems instead of plastic. If the Toyota engineers were okay with plastic then I'm okay with plastic. Most of the parts that make up 3-D printers are made by 3-D printers and they are the only parts that never seem to fail. There are a TON of companies on the market that are starting to mass produce items with an assembly line of 3-D printers. This is common practice in the hobby/rc world. Our local plumber (who has worked on my home a few times) keeps a 3-D printer mounted in the back of his van. When he needs hard to find fittings/connections or he is out of stock and doesn't have the time to drive down the mountain 45 minutes to pick up the needed part he simply prints it from preloaded files at low resolution in 30-40 minutes. None of his printed parts have ever failed. I have printed parts with my engineering students to retrofit electric wheel chairs with LED light bars that have taken a TON of abuse and they work just fine. We also printed student designed toy trains that were taken to a local preschool and seriously abused and they are still functioning and being played with today at that preschool. We even had students design articulating trucks for their skateboards to be able to do more tricks and have more manuevarbility in the skate park. all of those designs are used and abused on a daily level. The emblems would be installed and never touched again. I can't think of a single thing I have printed that has failed once it was engineered properly. There are multiple gun desings on the web that fire live ammo without failing. To say "3D printing is pretty much never, ever the way to make a finished product" tells me you don't know much about 3-D printing and what they can do and where that industry is headed. If your gonna come into this thread with nothing but negative comments then please do your homework first. I truly appreciate an educated critique and members coming in with a positive attitude and just trying to share ideas to improve upon what I'm doing; but your doing none of that.

It shouldn't effect the price. I didn't order the "chrome" stuff that is supposedly close to coming on the market. That would almost double the cost of the emblems. This is just a silvery metallic look. I can't comment on how good it looks since I havn't printed with it yet. I will know within a few days as will all of you. At this point I may be able to take a little off the cost of the emblems if I get enough interest. I priced things based on my expenses with my current printer. If the new printer is more reliable (which it should be) and I don't constantly have to buy replacement parts then I can probably price things better. I just don't know that yet, which is also why I'm not taking any orders. (other than a couple guys I promised in an old thread) If I don' get enough interest I wil still print emblems for people who want them with my current printer. In that situation then the prices will stay the same. This is all just a pole to see interest. There is still quite a few unkowns.

How about a classic katakana "TEQ" in Freeborn Red. :grinpimp:

That would be very cool for the purists.

:)

Wow. You truly are a purist because I have owned a number of Toyotas and Toyota trail rigs and I have no idea what your talking about. I thought the days of being green were over, but you just brought them right back. Please elaborate on the "TEQ" idea. Sounds quite interesting. Pics would be helpful if they exist.

I think he means something like this??

If you are an educator I implore you PLEASE teach relevant skills to our future design and manufacturing workforce.

Sorry to divert your thread. Good luck with your endeavor.

this looks really great, the one mounted on the front grille looks great too

I'd be interested in a TEQ emblem to replace my rear hatch sombrero that fell off.

I have never seen that but that is cool. I like the look even though I have no understanding of its meaning or reason. I will be out of town tonight through tomorrow night helping a family member move. When I get back Saturday I will try to mock up something with the "TEQ" logo. The logo is very basic and shouldn't take too much time to mock up in CAD.

I think he means something like this??
