Going to bring back an old thread. Has anyone actually used these TSL/SX2 tires? They sound great. And yes, I know all about bias ply tires. My 40 had 36" TSL/SX tires.

Im debating on either the 35x10-16 SX2 or the Q78 TSL on the 80 series. The SX2 is rated at 10 ply and Ive heard that it doesnt flex and hug the rocks as well as the Q78 which is rated a 6 ply. I love the SX2, but Im leaning towards the Q78 for this reason. Ive also heard the SX2 are smaller than they claim and the Q78 is more true to size. They will be mounted on a 16x7 steelie. Anyone else have experience with these two in particular?

Anyone running the SX2s on their 80 series?

I ran the TSL/SX on my 91 in a 36x12.50R15. They will flex nicely under the weight of an 80. Like any bias Swamper, they will need time to break in.
The Interco website gives you specifications for each size. Don't know where you heard they're not true to size.

Yeah the SXs seem to generally have a lower tread ply rating than the SX2. Those SXs you ran were like a Load range C, where as the SX2s Im talking about are like an E. A friend that I wheel with is running the 37x12/15 SX2s on his 60 on 7" wide wheels and they measure only 35". Im wanting the 35s, but for the 16" wheel, and those are rated at 10 ply like an E load. I guess I'm looking for pretty specific info on this particular 35x10/16 and whether it will flex under an 80, and if its actually 35" tall. The tread ply ratings are all over the place for these SX2s, among different sizes on the same size wheel and also in the same size but different wheel sizes. Im probably just gonna go with the Q78 TSLs, which I know are 35" and are 6 ply rated.

My friend runs Q78s on his FZJ80. He is pretty hard on them. They work awesome on the trail. However, the sidewalls are not that strong and he has had to deal with that several times, which is why these look very attractive to me.

A bump for this thread. I'm leaning more towards the SX2 in a 37x12R16.
I'm currently running the SAM-27 (36x13R16) on custom beadlock rims. These tires have about 4 seasons on them and are still very sale-able at this point.

Has anyone pulled the trigger on the SX2s?

If you're driving 80 mph for 8 hours to get anywhere, a TSL based anything isn't going to be your friend. Ive run lots of different swampers and they are all fairly similar on the road in the bias ply format. They just aren't made for long road trips. The SX2's are awesome offroad though...a friend of mine runs them on his yota pickup. Have you looked at the IROK ND radials? I'm running them in 37x12.50 size and i absolutely love them. They perform well on the road and are really good offroad from what i've seen so far. I'd definitely buy them again when these wear out.

Just an fyi, I ran 36" bias ply TSL's on my M715. Heavier truck than the 80, and I ran them with tubes and flaps. I wore them out in under 10 thousand miles. They rubber is soft and they have great traction, but they don't last very long. They also get flat spotted quickly creating a very bumpy ride until the heat up and round put.

a TSL radial might work for you as well...

Tire choice is subjective to how and where you wheel. In the east, the Iroks are "no rocks". Other than competition stickies, Swampers rule here.
In the west, folks lean more towards a tighter tread pattern which work better in places like Moab.
In any case, when funds become available, the SX2 is on the short list.

I live and wheel on the east coast. Im happy with my Iroks on the rocks. I'm not saying they are as good as TSL, but they are a much better all around tire when alot of road travel is required to get where you're going. Everyone has their opinion on tires, its all in what you want! The SX2 is a great tire, but they wear VERY quickly on the street.

I learned years ago not to have too much road time on Swampers. I trailer my tires to/from events. It's more of a hassle, but far safer IMO. But it does get old ;)
Anywhere I go wheeling is at least 3 hours from home, so it usually winds up being a weekend at least.

I understand that! I'm not setup to trailer mine, so it gets driven. We are headed to Windrock this fall...that's a 7+ hour drive each way!

Perhaps TrXuS MT? I had a set of 38.5s that where a bit big for my truck, never ran them off road but they did ride like a dream doing 70-75 with beads.
Everyone seems to like them.

After some consideration to how I use the truck - I'm an 8 hour drive from 'anything interesting' for wheeling. These super aggressive tires look awesome and would be great on off road terrain. But - I need to have the truck track, ride and control reliably at 80MPH continuously. The offroad capabilities of the tire, then, wind up being a secondary concern. Short of hauling a trailer with another 5 wheels & tires then doing a 5 wheel swap and leaving a loaded trailer at the trail head - then coming back for it... Not a great plan.

So, for the above, I ended up buying 3 new 315/75R16 Duratrac tires, putting the unused spare into the mix and rolling down the road.

That led to the next plan though. I'm geared with 4.88s and running 35" tires (I even have speedometer correction). At 80MPH I'm turning 3100 RPM and the transmission gets hot on long grades. So, my local shop guru is working with me to see if we can put an aux transmission cooler in somewhere. Supercharged - still lots of power left at 80mph. Transmission turning power into heat seems to be the likely issue - or so says the cooking of my right leg (AC off, windows down, 80mph, long mild grade (South Dakota's I-90), 98* outside temp.)

I'm also considering doing a mild body lift and slightly taller springs (OME heavy now) to be able to clear 37" tires... But, I'm now leaning more toward a very tall and pretty skinny AT style tire if I go this route. I'm still trying to figure out if it would be worth the time and $$$$. $2.5K in tires plus body lift plus new suspension plus arms plus brake lines plus a ton of labor... Likely into the $8-10K range.

I have also toyed with the idea of cutting the auto transmission out of the loop and going to a 5 speed manual. Yeah... nice dream, but quickly gets into crazy $$$$ and the underlying question of getting parts ongoing.

The flip side is I'm really happy with my truck as I have it set up right now in every condition but trying to hold 80+MPH without the transmission pumping so much heat into the radiator that it cuts the AC off and elevates the engine temps.

Yeah - that got a long way away from the tire discussion, but that where I ended up going after it.

Did you end up getting a set then ? I bought the tires you mentioned and got an email back saying they didn’t actually have them(4wdparts). So I ended up w/ new wheels and 37” STT Pros instead. Do want a set still for the bare stock wheels though.

I've gotten zero interest in the 36s that I put up for sale, so I'm just going to keep running them. When they're done, we'll see what's on the market.
