installing factory lockers (2 Viewers)

A few years ago I had factory locking axles installed on my 80. I paid $2000 to "trade out" my unlocked axles for locked and have the install done.

I went with the ARBs....just another opinion. When you buy used you cannot be sure what you are getting. If these were completely re-built axles I'd be more excited about swapping. Since I didn't readily find any I simply put in ARBs. I regeared and rebuilt my axles at the same time. Expensive way to go but my axles are like new.

Both electronic lockers and ARB lockers have their disadvantages and advantages so pick your poison and go for it.

I can tell you that I have installed factory cable lockers into my FJ40 LX and in retrospect I wouldn't do it again - go ARB. I do love my factory lockers, but what a PITA they were! Luckily I had the complete rear 60 series axle, but sourcing the long-spline front axle was not cheap.

Of course now that I have them they are pretty cool...:hmm:

Cheers,

Josh

I just bought the ARB's and gears and did the install myself. Probably comparable to the cost of finding and installing locked axles...

See the bottom of my sig line :)

I saved a bunch of money doing it peice meal, but I am a good shopper
:D
Front Locker -$375
Rear Locker - $350
ECU $100
Wiring harnesses Under $100 for two and made third
Long side rear axle shaft $50

$600 to install lockers and modify axel housing

Assuming its cheaper and easier to buy whole axles and do the swap is not 100% correct. I paid less to do this peicemeal and have the lockers installed (I did electronics) then axles would cost. Then you have to ship, install and still worry about the electronics

Course it all depends how much it costs to get the locker
I have 3:55 gears ( cummins swap) and had to use a 100 series carrier on the rear diff to make the gears work. I can't go with an aftermarket locker and will have to go the route of factory lockers.

I'm about to buy some used factory lockers for my 80 series. Where's a good place to source the long side rear axle shaft that you mentioned? On the rear axle, do I need to replace both sides or just the long side shaft? On the front axle, will I also need longer shafts? I'm assuming a toyota dealer may have these or be able to provide a part number.

I bought mine via ads on the internet. I think (not 100% sure) it was cruiserparts.net. Not sure if they are still around.. It has been 18 years since we did this so that is all I can tell you
