Some of this info is from my project Page, but though it best to do a complete write-up.....(will be added to as required)
(BJ73V-MN originally 3B engine and later model H55F gearbox)
The HZJ73 (with 1HZ engine) is the ideal match as it will mate up to the 1HDT since the block, gearbox, chassis is the same. But I’m starting with what I’ve got, an old BJ73 in need of a repower and a reasonably priced, rebuilt 1HDT
Some notes made from my starting point….
***The BJ73 make-up***
It’s 24volt!
It has the later model gearbox with the ‘ears’ on the bearing retainer and a long 21 spline, 280mm input shaft.

***The 1HDT engine***
It’s 12volt!! (Apart from the 24volt starting)
This didn’t come with a flywheel and clutch, so I sourced a 1HDT flywheel and 300mm HD clutch (approx.. 650nm) from New Zealand Automotive Distributors. The clutch was removed from another kit, so not a common thing to do.
The supplier can also do the 4Terrain Uniclutch which is a 2000nm twin plate universal kit which makes life simple in doing a 1HDT with a 1HZ 275mm gearbox setup. Looking

I also needed to obtain a new pilot bearing for the 1HDT. When doing this, just note the journal size. You will be going from the old 3B input shaft (12mm journal) to the HZJ / 1HZ input shaft (15mm journal)
***Required from a HZJ73 with H55F gearbox and 1HZ engine***
31111-60230 1HZ Bell Housing – The only way you’ll mate the existing gearbox to 1HDT. The 3B bell housing is very different. Note you should also have the matching rear end plate. Mine came with the engine, but in case you don’t have it, its part number is 11355-17010. The 1HZ bell housing is 20mm shorter than the 3B one, so this is where you need the shorter input shaft and bearing retainer.
33311-60170 Input Shaft - 21 spline, 260mm
33131-60040 Late F/2F/3F/1HZ short 10/21 spline bearing retainer. This is because of the bell housing being 20mm shorter, plus adding the different clutch release bearing/carrier being longer. So, the overall length of the bearing retainer needs to be shorter but the travel for the release bearing brought closer to the main gearbox housing.
31230-60130 Release bearing specified (Suitable for HZJ73 / 1HZ and HDJ81 / 1HDT combinations) Note it’s quite different to the old 3B one and longer in length.
Now because of the bell housing and clutch changes so far, I thought best to complete the set and keep it inline with what comes in an HZJ73. This will make replacing parts much easier, instead of manufacturing something. So also obtained the ...
31204-36110 Clutch Release Fork Sub-Assy
31470-60161 Clutch Release Slave Cylinder Assy
For mounting the engine to the chassis....
51421-60140 and 51422-60140 Left and Right engine mounting brackets. These get welded to the chassis. Now at the time, these things are really hard to get hold of, especially 51422-60140 was listed as no longer available. The good thing about these is that they can be welded into the same spot as the HZJ73, because the chassis is identical. You’ll just need to cut the 3B brackets off.

04331-60160 Gasket Kit, Manual Transmission Overhaul – Gaskets to be replaced as you’ll strip down the gearbox to install the new input shaft.
If so inclined, at this time you may want to rebuild some of the internals on the transfer and gearbox. So you’ll need the following…….
