Injection pump life expectancy thread

I have an inline pump on my 1979. It's NEVER been fed any fuel additives (and never likely to be), never had any seals changed, and it's only leaked once (on one of the outlet connections to the injector lines so that's nothing to do with the fuel!) in more than 30 years of use.

And that leak was fixed simply by tightening the nut.

Lube is needed in rotary pumps while inlines get lube from the crank case.
Lube will help your injectors and seals vs not having it
Regardless of the diesel I own it's a cheap thing that can only help

Take for example my dads bj70 has 365,000kms
Never had pump issues with leaking or bad seals. He recently changed the diaphragm. $30

Seal deterioration in older rotary IPs (pre-1994) is due to both simple age of the seals and the loss of aromatics in the fuel which prevent rubber seals from drying out. The process for removing sulfur also removes the aromatics from the fuel. As far as I know, no additive has been found to replace these aromatics. Most post 1994 rotary injector pumps used Viton or Viton type material for seals in place of the old rubber seals.

And you are giving snake oil the credit for what?

Take for example the 1960's built diesel tractors here which have never had diesel additives and never had any related problems. The oldest has done about 9,000hours.

If rotary pumps needed extra lubrication, they would have extra lubrication systems added at the factory. The fuel is enough lube, adding more isn't going to help anything. Diesel fuels have lubricity standards which they have to meet.

When I talked to an old timer at Fred Holmes fuel injection a few years back (he saw my cruiser and wanted to look under the hood), he said the pump should be good for at least 800,000kms (if I remember correctly), he really recommended using the stanadyne additve and changing the fuel filter every 10,000kms.
