Thats o.k. Keep me in mind if hear of anyone else looking. My L.C. would be perfect for someone who wants a nice cruiser but can't or doesn't want to spend much over $20k. I know everyone thinks highly of their own vehicle, but mine is super clean for the miles. I will sell it with or without the new 285's. Thanks again,

Shawn

another point of reference...I just picked up my new (to me) 99 UZJ100 w/ 51k on it for $22k. It was a one owner west coast truck with the R air & R locker...it had all the records...I had resigned myself to the fact that I was going to have to pay upwards of $28k for a nice clean low mileage rig, especially on the west coast but I took advice from all on the board here and held out. I flew down to LA from Sacramento this morning and drove it home....very sweet and worth the wait :)

Hi,

I am also starting my search for the ideal 100 series. I'm pretty sure I want to stick with 2000-2001 because of the traction control features (you can always add ARB lockers later on if needed.) I'm a bit concerned on the mileage. What mileage is too high for a used 100series cruiser? I would assume it would be very different for one that has records vs. one that has no maintenance history at all. Also, I'm rather annoyed about the stupid wood grain fading and discoloring and looking like crap! Is there a way to remove this??

I would like to spend under $28k.

If anyone sees anything especially in the local Bay Area, CA please pass along!

Thanks,

JJ

I think anything up to 90-100k would be good to go as long as it had basic maintnance. I doubt you'll find one with that many miles though.

I have one for sale.

Yup, sad to say. I need to sell the TLC. Family is growing and I need a bigger house. I am selling a 2000 TLC. It has 69,500 miles, excellent condition, tires still look brand new, Toyota certified warranty and I also purchased an extended warranty that is transferable. It has all options except Nav. I am asking $29k obo which is what I owe so please lay off on the "too much" comments. I am very willing to work on the price. I just listed it on Auto Trader in NM this week so it should be showing up by the weekend. Let me know if anyone who is seriously interested, would like some pictures and I could send them a few. Thanks fellas.

well, remember there is the little detail of the timing belt job at 90K...

And the truck needs it's first tune-up with new spark plugs at 100k

I figure everyone knows that if you buy a LC at 60k+ miles you are buying a timing belt job. (And should figure it in the price) Most other more-than-routine maintnence starts at around 60k and little damage will be done if it has been neglected until 90k. I figure that everyone buying a rig at this age expects to have to do quite a bit of initial maintnence. (this is the compromise of buying used) I personally would rather do it or get it done myself that way I know it was done right and get the chance to inspect the vehicle and fix other problems.

I think up to 100k is a good point because even if the timing belt hasn't been done yet, once you do it is as good as new. Same for the other services. On my "new to me" 98 with 65k I plan on changing every fluid just because I can't be sure what was done to it in the past. Even though the truck looks like it has been well maintained.

The one thing I would watch out for is a truck that was wheeled hard. With all the mall crusiers available I see no reason to by a truck that has been ridden hard.

Signs to watch for
- mud high in the engine compartment or in the radiator fins
- rock damage to frame rails or suspension parts
- any "new" parts that aren't normal - A "new" front diff or a new driveshaft
- or any high performance parts - sliders, ARBs, winch, Snorkle ect..

Ask the driver where the truck has taken him. If he says Moab,Rubicon, Central America or every muddy creek bottom west of the pecos then I wouldn't pay top dollar for the rig.

The February 2005 edition of NADA for the southeastern USA list the following average values for a 2000 LC with third row seat and rear AC:

Retail: $28,400
Trade-in: $24,600
Loan: $22,200

It would be interesting to see NADA figures posted for the same LC for different parts of the US.

opinions on this 100 Series

I've located a 2002 LC "Silver/gold" with all options ( Navigation, tow package, rear air,the works) Are there any more options that I'm not aware of?

History:

1st owner, used for daily commute, put 77k miles on it. No maintenance records. The 2nd owner put another 10k, total mileage 87k miles. They are asking $30,000. The vehicle is in excellent shape, new tires and brakes with about 10k on them.

The timing belt will be due for this, how hard is this and how much for Toyota to do this job?

waiting for your thoughts,

Jasper

Sounds like a decent price but I'd definitely pay for a vehicle inspection at a trusted Toyota mechanic. The timing belt job will vary from place to place so get more than one quote. Do a search about the timing belt because there are several different items such as the water pump which should be done at the same time.

For that vehicle, Kelley Blue Book "private party value" is $28,555 for my zip code, in "good" condition.

rockclmbr,

Almost forgot, go to the FAQ section at the beginning of the 100 series forum for a link to the timing belt question thread. Good 411 in there.

Are you buying form an individual? Sounds a little high to me for a 2 owner, and I wouldn't buy one without maintenance records. I don't understand why no one- not even the dealership- will at least check off the little boxes in the maintenance schedule. Seems irresponsible to me.

5-Speed 2003

One year newer (2003my) and you get the 5sp automatic....but there is always one more "carrott" to chase...

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, I just don't get it...How hard is it really to keep paperwork or a notepad whith the maintenance history. When i sell my vehicles I have a full excel spreadsheet with every detail.

I think I'll hold out for something with lower miles. The seller seamed desperate, the longer I wait the cheaper it will get ( I hope!)

I guess I am irresposible then........I have no records(but feel free to dive into my box of parts recipts) for any of my Cruisers, but they get as good or better maintence then 99% of the Cruisers out there.

who else would drop $1000+ on new parts for a 82 fj40 to fix a stupid little exhaust leak? :D

My 2000 UZJ had no records when I bought, but I know enough of what to look for to be able to tell if its been loved or not.....it had been loved :)

I was beginning to think I was anal for keeping maintenance records. When I buy oil, filter, parts, etc. the receipts go in a envolope with the date and mileage at installation. Once or twice a year, all the info goes on a spread sheet but I still keep the receipts as proof. These records are good for my own information because I tend to keep a vehicile for 300k miles and, if I do decideto sell it, the value IMO is increased by 10%. On a $20-30,000 vehicile, that's a lot of $$$$. I wouldn't be afraid of a LC or LX with >100Kmi if the price was right, it passed a rigorous inspection, and the maintenance recorders were available. A timing belt change is $500-$1000 at a dealer plus $100-150 for the water pump. I did it myself in 16 hours over two days with the FSM and standard tools except access to a hydraulic press is needed and a crank shaft holding tool must be purchased or made (easy to make).

If all goes according to plan, tomorrow I will be the proud owner of a 2000 cruiser in River Rock over Oak. Price = $23K ; mileage = 69,000. Time to start planning a 100 series wish list......off to Christo's site :D

That sounds like a great price and I love that color. I was looking at a 2000 Silver with 62,000 miles and they were asking $29,900 :( I was not interested when they start that high you know you will never get them to the $23-25K that they should be selling it for.
