I'm in over my head on electrical issues

If there is a wrench day, I will help, let me know particulars and I will adjust if necessary. Happy to help any way I can.

Depends on what you’re looking to accomplish. If you’re just trying to get it back to working order then I’d say probably leave it in and repair. If you’re tired of chasing nuisance crap and think it’s going to rear it’s ugly head again and you don’t want to deal with it ever again then pull it out.

The 9th could work for me.

Shoot, am out the 9th. Sorry have some busy weekends the next two weekends.

After the 9th I have a better chance of getting something on the books before my wife does.

So it looks like I may have to travel after the weekend of the ninth, so I can do Friday March 8th, if that works. If anyone is interested. I know that's kind of last minute, and I appreciate any help I can get at this point. The plan is to:

  1. Look over the electrical and see if anything glaring stands out that I can fix that may solve my shorting issue.
  2. Possibly pull the whole harness out so I can unwrap it and inspect it better for burned wires/shorts.
  3. Drink some beer, hopefully light the bonfire and talk cruisers

Thanks again everyone

I may talk the wife in to coming over that evening.

Wiring is mostly wrecked by previous owners, attaching a trailer connection.
So the problem is in the front (some idiot tried to tap power for something) or rear, mostly in between is safely tucked away in the cab.
I just removed all non factory wires, then the black tape, spend hours, then some bend or damage (where a door opens, or license plate connection) might be found and repaired, maybe a rusted bulb insert.
Write down the colours and they should match a schematic, it is not really hard to fix but needs extended go trough.
good luck

I agree, there was a ton of PO hack jobs, and I did as you suggested and removed all of it. In fact the only electrical connections left are ignition, and they seem to work fine.

I took about a week off from it, and have started unplugging and then trying another fuse but it's slow going and tedious. I completely removed the rear sub harness and the problem persisted, that's where I am now

Time will turn out to be on your side. The time you spend while in your shop will be insignificant compared to the time you would've spent broken down in BFE or watching your rig go up en flambe

So after talking with @Phulcrum and others at the meeting tonight, I went home and had a few beers in the garage. I decided to pull the harness and lay it out and see what the deal is. I went to disconnect the alternator and the connector was melted together. finally got it apart and decided to throw a fuse in and see if I got side markers etc. and I did.

I'm not convinced that I got it totally solved but at least progress was made. The terminal that was melted was the alternator output wire that fed the fuse panel.

As for this weekend I got called into work Friday with Saturday as a possibility. I appreciate all the offers to help from @Phulcrum, and @elripster and @Cruiser Bauers..hopefully we can find a open weekend and try again.

@Tylerh84 Iet me know when you're free again, would like to hear more about these blood diamonds we were talking about tonight
