I have set the vales on 22RE's before and didn't like it, all the stuff you have to remove......REinstall.......if its wrong...do it all over again....

Can one of the last things on the stand be to get a hot gun and blast the top end get it to swell and then set the valves?

Never heard of anyone doing this before...

See anything right off I don't?

What do you think?

Another one:

I have several and will probably have more 1st gen wiring harnesses  the PITA ones that are held on with wire clips NOT the simple press and pull types...
Can I get a professional to cut my wiring harness in half, get some sort of plug in board and install?

I have always been under the assumption that it could possibly cause a short/ surge? (any breaks in the harness)

I will not attempt it.

Would painless have something like that?

Holy crap, reading all that makes my head hurt...

Let me just say that the 22RE is one of the EASIEST engines to adjust the valves. Try doing the valves on a 3VZ V6, you'll want to stick a flaming hot socket wrench in your eye.

Seriously, if it's that hard for you, then you need to sell off all your trucks and get a Corolla.

You can set the valves cold to .07 and .11 mm I think that's the right numbers... .08 and .12 normally right?

As for the wire harness.... I don't think cutting it and splicing would be a big issue on a 1st gen.... but putting all those wires into 2 connectors would be a pain....

I dont care??? It's the ONLY one I work on and IH8IT!

I would hope the people I get to do the heads do this (head replacements, as far as I go on the 3vz)/ I would pay for that and wouldn't even attempt it! Let $omeone else stick a flaming hot socket in there eye ;)

Thats what I'm looking for thanks! I wish the cold setting was in the books.

As for the connection, I also thought today if I could get a plug in connector(?) it would save me from pulling the upper intake :). I'll go thought the initial pain for the ease of doing it the next time , just pull the back up light plug from the tranny break the connection and I'm home free! Motor mounts, bell housing bolts, 1 wire and connector......... ahhhhh the thought, :smokin:

You do realize that the entire EFI harness can be disconnected very easily? Pull the pass side kick panel, unplug all the connectors from the EFI ECU, pull that huge harness with the grommet thru the firewall, drape it over the engine. That's pretty much all the electrical connections to the engine, except for maybe the starter, the oil pressure sender, and alternator. This is how they dropped the engine in the truck at the factory.

I've done that and H8 IT !

skin a wire and dont see it....PITA to get the wires that are strapped into the body that lead to the computer loose to pull the harness, and I'd hate to skin a wire

Yes I have realized that, and taken it into consideration.

I have TWO 1st Gen wiring harnesses, and plan to keep them, survival mode says I will be pulling the motors again Who knows what else I'll buy..

How hard can it be to cut the harness, strip & crimp on the little connections and slip them into the back of a connector? Got plenty of room to do that. Do it, it's done!

I am just under the assumption that it could cause harm to the system.

Harness, Shmarness

From an electrical standpoint, it doesn't matter whether you use the factory harness or the RCA jacks off your stereo as long as you get all the connections right. Don't accidentally cross anything up, and make sure its all labeled. Make sure you get appropriately sized connectors (mimic the wire size), 'cause DC current is pretty finicky.

Make sure the connectors are rated for high enough amperage. Check your fuses, and make sure the connector on any given circuit is rated higher than the fuses on that circuit (so the fuse blows up before the wire does!). If you do that, there should be no problem with current fluctuation.
