Just picked up a "93,for a truck that's NOT going to be wheeled "HARD" what do you guys think of it?I plan on adding a set of Downey torsion bars and rear 2in. springs.:)

they say the torsion bars dont affect ride quality but i seems like it must. i have no experience w/ them. however the lift kits for the 88-95.5 trucks aren't nearly expensive as the tacoma kits. have you looked at a spindle lift and shackles?

Downey's products are great and proven, but did you price the same parts by Old Man Emu? We just installed OME torsion bars and Dakar springs on a friend's Hilux and the truck rides way better than stock. He was able to twist the bars w/o loosing droop or ride quality and the rear doesn't bounce as harsh as it used to.

I woudnt even lift it I'd get traction first go Trutrac front, pocket locker (powertrax no slip), fullcase (DD?, trutrac) or most importantly selectable rear or heck or no rear at all. (all out, got the $$, ARB f/r)

Does not effect handling, mpg, bigger tires cost more money and IMO dont last as long.

If you lift it first, it WILL lead to more costly decisions, Lift, Tires, NO gears? Bad mpg, drive train stress, stretched chain (plastic Tchain guiedes), then you get gears $$$$$, lockers? even more $$$$

So, lift: No mpg, probably a tranny and you"ll still get stuck.

You dont need a lift to go places, you need traction.

Traction and tires, then you'll have a sleeper, bad a$$ 4x4, 20mpg, gets same clutch wear, less stress on Tchain,..................................low CG, less wind resistence.

and a snorkle :)

You can fit 38s on it without lifting... just grinding and welding... Depends on what you want to use it for. I had 37s with original gears, and good mpg. Only slightly more than with stock tires, but that was after installing intercooler (2LT-II).

Buy a 2" BL from performance accesories and cut a bit, than you can run 33 without any trouble... and maybe some new shackles rear. Leave the front in stock height.

Than go for locker rear, I have an aussielocker and it WORKS!!

Remove stabilizer bars when wheeling it, it makes as much difference as a locker... ;)

I'm running stock height still and it works well for me. If you really want to go 2" or so I would look at BJ spacers and replacement springs in the rear. I am planning to go with OME for my rear springs but for now I have AALs and 1.5" shackles to fix the sag.

If you decide you want to wheel it I agree with the other guys that money can be better spent for capability. Go for skids and a rear locker. Keep the stock t-bars because they flex better and either get swaybar discos or ditch it all together. This will do way more for capability than lift will.

I couldn't agree more. I wheeled my '88 for years with ball joint spacers up front (search yotatech.com for more info about them) and I had lift shackles in the rear. I fit 32x10.50 Swampers with that setup, but they would fit stock anyway.

Stick a locker in the rear, and buy the lowest gearing you can afford. I ran a spool and dual t-cases, and my junk would go just about anywhere.

The key to IFS is to not spend much money on it and keep it low, 'cause you're not going to improve it much unless you go with a long travel kit. Aftermarket torsion bars tend to make the ride stiffer and most people I've talked to prefer the stock ones. Put your money into traction, gearing, and protection.

4crawler also makes a good pair of bjs. I run his with stock torsion bars and extended leafs and shackles in the rear. It is a great cheap set up and he can make them at custom heights <1.5 inch. He can also include a sway bar lowering kit and a 1 inch differential drop kit. Just another option to consider. www.4crawler.com
