Hello smart people. Please help me identify this part.

I'm chasing some electrical gremlins at the moment in Lucy (73 FJ40).
I've got an ignition issue. When I turn the key, the starter (2yrs old) lamely tries to turn over (and the alternator is trying to turn the fan belt) but I haz no fire.

As I'm waiting for my wife to return from shopping so I can borrow her rig to go buy another multimeter (can't find mine), I started poking around and trouble shooting possible culprits. I opened up the igniter and checked out the coil (i'll need the multimeter to test these) and then I noticed the top prong of the plug going into this unknown part is broken off in the plug body.

Any idea what this is? Is this likely my culprit?

Cheers,

Horn relay-should not be any relation to the ignition

For the no fire--
The coil appears to have a loose connection on the bottom terminal(+ ?).
Check the coil + to make sure you have 12.6V or greater(per Pighead)
If so, pull the coil lead out of the dist and land it close to the block(or other good ground) Turn the engine over to see if you have a good blue arc from the coil lead- if so, hook it back up and pull a plug and do the same-see if you have good spark arc; if ok, seems like the ignition circuit may be ok.-if not, do the points thing.
When did the issue first surface? Was anything done to the truck prior to this happening?
Was it running/starting ok before, and now it's not? What changed?
BTW - good picture views-they are zoomed out just enough to see what you are talking about

hmm, that's why the horn quit working.

I think more than anything, she's pissed at being ignored. It had been starting great over the last year. I haven't driven much since last October due to work keeping me from tackling a rotor swap and brake job. It's been sitting either out in the Portland rain or in a damp, unheated garage.

I'll check the terminals on the coil in the am.

Thanks for the input!

Oh the great Pacific Northwet!! Moisture seeps into every nook and cranny. Since it has not been running for a while, pull all the plug wires from the cap (one at a time, unless you have a better memory than I do) and check for that white powdery corrosion. If the spark is weak to begin with, any corrosion will make starting even harder. Pop the cap off and check inside also. Moisture can condense inside there and create havoc with the points and the rotor/cap contacts.

Please Help! I need a little help identifying this starter. I can't find any markings on it. All I know is that it is not correct for my 1976 2f FJ40.

what makes you think it's not correct?
looks like a proper direct drive starter, however if you are comparing it to a later gear reduction starter i could see the confusion.
