I would like some opinions on the 22RTE...

In my travels, I found a 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a 22RTE automatic. I haven't looked at it too close but it seems pretty straight...it's got the usual rot around the rear fenders. I need to take a look under it to make sure it's not too bad.

But how about the motor...is this a rare engine?

Is it a good engine?

It has 88K...unless it was tampered with.

The guy is asking $2500

I've never been impressed with forced induction. I don't think Toyota is either (and we won't even talk about the TRD blowers) because they quit building the Turbo engines after only two years of warranty claims. Yes, you're going to run into souls who have had a Turbo engine for 200,000 miles with no trauma, but that definitely is not the norm.

Only built in 86-87 to compete with the other V6's that had came on the market... before the infamous 3.0 came out in 88. It's ok.... if you like tinkering then they can be fun, but the 5 speeds that came behind some of them are much more desirable than the engine.

Quite honestly...I'm not interested in the extra horses and torque. I just want to be sure that the turbo isn't gonna start causing problems. I've owned a runner with a regular 22re and it was great. I'm assuming the turbo is just another thing to break and cause headaches.

As far as I'm concerned, all old school toyota trucks are underpowered. That's just the way it is with these rigs. I'm looking for reliability.

yeah...automatics aren't to popular but I don't mind them in a truck.

I swapped a 22RTE into my old '84 4runner.... it was a mostly trail duty rig and the extra go from the turbo was helpful on the trails. It was reliable but then again, the turbo was rebuilt just before I got the engine to the tune of $900 but it did last the original owner 15 years or so.... 2500$ is not bad with the low mileage IMHO.... I am pretty sure the 1st gear in the auto is also lower and a more stout tranny which is preferred of course.

I am currently putting a 22rte in my 87 4runner and i've found that the turbo is expensive to replace as are some of the parts. At about 100k you might want to get a rebuild kit for the turbo. As long as the previous owner never ran the truck out of water or oil, the turbo should be fine.
IMO, the 22rte is just plain cool.

Also, if you do buy it, put a larger, less restrictive exhaust on it to prevent said cracking.

RET HEAD is bigger chamber 80 ?? CC

RET Pistons are lower comp....ratio is 7.5:1 IIRC

other than that the RET has a drilled and taped hole for the oil line on the turbo, it is hard lined so head removal inside the bay is near impossible......M.I x infinity

Turdblow puts out 7psi stock = waste of time, unless its good (keep it until it break$/ goe$ bad)

All the turbos get cracked turbine housings. I had one for years and put a kit with a t3 turbo on it and it was great but they are money and time.

As with all turbos, the 80's where there teething time, do not use any old turbo. They have less efficient everything.

That is correct you can but a rebuild kit but it is much $$, dont waist your time money and someone else's labor!

A guy on EBay (long time ago) had rebuilt T-3 and custom exhaust manni for $400, I'd jump all over that!

manifold looks like this guy:
