between cutting two of my fingers on a panel cover, and all the skin i lost replacing the spark plugs on my wife's 3.0, i could be the poster child for Johnson and Johnson, you guys remember the commercials.

i am stuck on band-aid cause band-aid is stuck on me.

or the poster boy for 22R-E conversions...

"Save a person from a lifetime of misery, downconvert to the tried and true 22R series, in no way at all will you regret this." Brought to you by the Four Cylinder Frenzy Foundation.

Changing the plugs and doing a headgasket job on my bro's old 4Runner was enough to keep me away from the 3.0.:D 22R/RE's are so much easier to work on.:)

i told the wife if i can find one in bad shape that has the 22re, i am going to get and swap it in, she said you ain't going to do that to my truck! well i guess if i find one what she don't know will not hurt her.

Nahh, put a Diesel in that bad boy...

4x4labs has a OM617 kit for a A440... I wonder if the BH is the same?

Parts hound it right and the most expensive piece will be the adapter...

OR, there is a thread on 4BT swaps... Just fab the adapter...

Or, TDI in a Toyota pickup - now with pics

"The round trip is 222 miles, and we filled the tank before leaving and filled it again at the same pump when we got home.

Trip average: 30mpg.

This trip included some serious elevation gain, as well as about 35 miles of locked in 4wd.

The truck "wanted" to go about 60mph, but it could be pushed to 65. It climbed very well, and could hold 60mph up some fairly steep hills. EGT never climbed above 1000F.

BTW, we were not slowing down traffic. - Conditions were pretty wet/snowy and most people didn't want to go faster than 60mph.

Right now the gearing could be improved. Because it had an automatic transmission, the differential ratio is 4.3:1 whereas the truck with a manual transmission had differential ratio of 4.1:1. I should be able to swap gears with someone for very little money.

I'll also be increasing the tire size to 33X9.5, which will help engine speed. Torque is NO problem."

Gotta agree here. The 3.0 is the worst motor Toyota ever made (and yes, I'm including the 2LT-E in that). Hard to work on, not powerful, inefficient, not particularly reliable, ugly....

1KZ-TE if you have one, Seriously. If you don't have the R series motor mounts, it's just as much work as a L series diesel, but without the downsides....

Yes Hilux, they are more expensive. But that's the only problem. My truck LOVES the 2LT-E, the power and torque bands are absolutely meant for that truck. And everything about it is engineered to fit and work well in a mini-truck (that's why I went that way, dollars be danged!).

ok, lets play a game... It's called "What's easier and cheaper to get?"

Very true, but I have a couple counterpoints:
1. The OM617's got a bad rep in my book, not for mechanical reasons, but because around here only snobs, twits, and tourons find their way behind the wheel of a Benz, and I'll gnaw my own arms off before considering stooping to their low, or taking the "Toyota" badge off the front of The Mule.

2. The Cummins 4BT-A a good small motor, but I find them to be noisy, rough, dirty, and not nearly as efficient as other diesels out on the market, plus they're freakishly deep, requiring SO to clear the front oil pan, and recent legislation's put the crush on finding a 4 reasonably. Beyond this, they're not as affordable as it may seem at first glance, when you factor in adapters, SO, brake system mods (either a vacuum pump on the alt, or hydroboost) engine mounts, and fuel lines the difference between the Cummins and doing it right with a Toyota diesel isn't as far off.

3. TDI, I really can't say anything either way about them, VW makes a good engine, but the situation's similar to the MB scenario, except instead of snobs around here, it's old hippies who compensate for increased economy with extra drag from a ton and a half of bumper stickers all over their car. ugh.

If I could easily afford it, and get the materials readily, I would love to drop in a 1KD-FTV with a Taco 6-speed and my '83 t-case, that would be a fun rig you could take anywhere. :steer:

Ive owned 22re/auto's they are dangerously slow. With 31" mt's and 15x8 steelies, I couldnt maintain 70mph in OD on flat ground. In contrast I could motor my 3.0/auto 5000 lb 92 4runner on 37's and an exo cage at 65 in OD.

While Ill never recommend someone buy a 3.0 truck, Ive had 4 3.0's all high mileage, and I put a ton of mileage on them....I never had a problem, super reliable, no complaints.

But the 3.4 is the way to go.

Just for contrast and not to start an argument, I once had a 22RE/A340f and it was nothing like you say. Yes it was slow, yes it had 33's, and yes it would powerbrake...

Though it was relatively vary slow, and with the 33's the TC stalled at a vary low speed, but it wasn't any slower or faster than a 22RE/5 speed with 33's...

[strike]In some ways[/strike] I wish I still had it... In some ways I prefer an automatic.

And though I despise the H case, lol, it could stand to benefit from bolting in 40 odd hp and 40 ft. lbs. of torque

Agree, all of the gas milage of a V8, none of the power!:hillbilly:

But the 3.4 is the way to go.

X2, several locally have done them and rave about the result. Relatively easy swap, much better power, easier to work on, better mileage and a more reliable motor, what is not to like.

Well a v8 wasnt an option back then so....

Hey I have a soft spot for 3.0's. Ive gotten many years of hard use out of them, yes they are prolly the worst motor toyota ever made (says more about toyota than the 3.0) but they have always treated me well, so im happy to take some flak on the boards for the little boat anchor. Plus 60% of the trash talking are by people who never owned one, they are just regurgitating what they read on the interwebs.

I agree, kinda.:hillbilly: Mine served me well, for a ton of miles. Had the heads off twice, was a pain to work on, didn't have much for power and got poor mileage. My LX450 gets better mileage, is a better wheeler and has more power.

My 80 is smoking in the power department, however my mini smokes it on mileage even with the V6.

I know I could sink the 80, stand it on it's noze and total Nissans in style but that would just make me sad.

This is unrelated to powerplant/personal situation but my mini's beatability factor makes it outwheel my Landcruiser.

Also for the record I hate working on everything,
3.Slo = whatever. :rolleyes:
