If anyone paid attention in chat, I had a pissy week last week. Only to end with a broken timing chain. Thing is I didnt know it was a broken timing chain, as Im only 17 and have never had a 22r before.

When it did go, i checked for spark. I was getting none. My grandpa (usually very good with advice) said "pull start the damn thing". We did. <<<< Yes. The worst mistake of my life. :bang::bang::bang:

Im now in the process of doing the chain. We did a quick one over and every thing seems to be moving right, nothing making horrible noises. But this is only by hand without the spark plugs at a turtle speed. I ran out of time last night, and tonite ill have to work. I need to fire her over before I make anymore assumtions.

BUT- Assume that its all f-cked up.
What can I do?

I can rebuild all of it!
Bore it over (Wats max?)
Cam it.
Header.
What else?

or

I can swap a 4.3 (have one now)
a 3.4 (idk)
or a diesel (want this running by dec!)

I have a 1000 limit. Not much. But its what i have.
Assume;
All work is done by myself and my father
We have mucho tools
I have a HUGE discount at a maching shop/parts store (50-75% off most going rates)
I would keep my tranny with the 4.3 as the donor is all there with a bad tranny.
And it has to be done by Dec. 25th

Basing this on not being a purist (wristy is excused:flipoff2:), What would MUD do?

You'll never swap to a different engine for $1000.

In theory, the WORST is some of the valves are bent. Pull the head, take a look at them. Call engnbldr, get a new set of valves and a gasket set, maybe a new set of springs and tappets too. Have the seats ground, maybe deck the head flat, then put it all back together. It's not that big of a deal.

So i just got done. It ran. But crappy. Had compression on cyl 1&3 nothing on 2&4.

My problem is justifying the money i would spend on fixing it. I hate the motors power. I cannot stand it.

I know, i know. What should i expect out of a 4cyl pushing 31's?

Im not hell bent on getting rid of it. But man, i just hate the way grannys look at me when they fly past me at 70mph.
I know the motor swap is un reasonable now, but... Man i gotta have some hopes!

or spend some leftover cash after you fix your head and get some new lower gears. some will argue that 31s dont justify regearing but its your call. if you hate the acceleration that much then it may be worth the time and money. do you ever plan on 33s? if not or not in any realistic near future then maybe you should consider 4.56 gears or even 4.88s depending on your setup (lifted?) and that way youll be ready for 33s should the time come. just a thought.

this may shed some perspective on regearing to get back some acceleration and help with uphills: https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota-truck-tech/169817-tire-sizes-gears.html

Alright, i check the inside. cyl 1 & 3 are ok. 2&4 look like something blew up. I mean they look like s***!
So, what can I do. Ive thought about the gears, and they will probably come soon.
Has anyone bored 50 over? Im thinking of doing that, a valve job, and a mild cam + header.

I can prolly do it for under 700?
Then i can do gears for christmas, if im a good boy!

Please explain what you mean by this. Are the pistons damaged?

I highly recommend you call engnbldr. They sell pistons and rings to go up to 0.040 over. Not sure what they limit is with this block, but he will know.

Go to the FAQ thread and read the one under "More Power" by Ted from engnbldr. This will help you make up your mind about what you want to do with this engine. The most that you should go is 0.040 over. Ted says in that thread, that he had to carefully check a number of blocks before he found one that had a thick enough cylinder wall for going 0.060 over.

Post some pictures. We can give you better advice if we see what you are seeing.

You might be able to get away with replacing damaged pistons and new rings for the bottom end. One of the performance cylinder heads and cam from engnbldr would go a long way in giving you the performance you are after. This could be done for around your $1000 limit.

Good luck.
