I sprung over my HJ61

Sweet cruiser!

BTW, did you trim your rear rockers for your rear bumper? Also, what's the size of the tubing on your side protection/wings?

That looks soooo nice. But why are you driving on the left hand side? I thought Kanuck models were the same as US as far as which side you drive on? Or have I led a sheltered life?

have I said how much I like those tires? They would be perfect for the mud I love so much...

I believe it's a Japanese spec HJ61.

Nope, I didn't trim the rockers, if you look close you can see them hanging down. I just couldn't cut them out.....they are perfect. If they get bashed, I will eventually remove them. The round tube on the sides is 1.5" hrew on top of 2x4 with 0.25" wall. The back is 2x6 with 0.188 wall. I origanally didn't have any angles on the bumper, but it didn't look right. I ended up trimming the back up and angling the sides to the contour of the truck. The plan is to make a tire carrier/cooler rack out of the same material. Unfortunately, my dies for the bender haven't made it here yet. It was my first "big" welding project and was very frustrating.....

You are right, the truck is a Japanese spec HJ61 :D

Yep, nice looking rig.

Have you figured out your fuel mileage yet?

Curious as to your MPG.

How's your gearing with those tires?

TB

I was getting about 17-18 with those tire before the SOA. I'll let you know if that changes. As for gearing it is ok with the auto and 4.1 I can do 120km/h on the highway at around 1900 rpm. A set of 4.56 would be perfect and get me up into the power band a little better.....

Here's a pic of the sweet 4x4 labs steering, no rubbing and iot works great!!

that looks really really nice...
keep it up man

Yes I read about those guys. Man that sure puts the tie rod way back there.

Nice to see one in operation.

TB

Your picture screwed me all up. Then I figured it out. Your steering box is on the oposite side than mine. I was compairing your set up to my crossover set up.

Hmm.

Did you use the stock HJ61 springs? The tie rod looks like it's only 3-4" from the oil pan, does it hit it?

Yes, I used the stock springs, I tried out a different set off of a BJ with an add a leaf but they where inverted at rest....

I was not able to get the tie rod to hit the oil pan at any time, except.....

If you invert BOTH front springs about 2" past flat, I was only able to do this with the fork lift pushing down on the front end.

Here is a pic of the steering under some flex.

Those are some good pictures you are posting. Thanks.

Hey, just incase no one told you, that dang steering wheel is on the wrong side of your truck.

I'd look into fixing that.

I've been thinking of using the 4x4labs on my FJ60 when I finally do a SOA. I'm concerned the tie rod will hit the oil pan. Wonder if the 2F and the 12H-T pans are similar?

Also, are your shackles stock length?

Cool, almost epic-looking photos there.. I had the military craze myself for a little while and was able to score some 9x16 XZLs but w/ 16" FJ80 rims the rig was a little tall and skinny and the gearing wasn't right. I am very happy with 4.11s and 35s so far and chose to sell the Michelins. Looks great though!!!

but from behind you can begin to see how goofy looking it was... It looked very odd from far, like it was goign to fall over everytime I went around a corning.. :(

and the rest of the photos at http://www.collegeinternetsolutions.com/tires

And here it is with smaller tires but all painted up. I also did a quick wheel without shocks one afternoon and it brought the whole truck down about an inch (2 in the rear ;) ) which actually turned out awesome... So it looks a little better than this... But man that is one cool rig!

I believe my shackles are 1" longer then stock, I will measure them in the morning.

Luke at 4x4 labs makes a couple different set of arms with different hieghts for the tie rod. The higher the raise the more arch you need in your springs. With the first set of springs we tried there where going to be rubbing issues.... You also have to consider your castor. I went with about 3* and so far it is OK. If you went withh more, you have to be carefull about rubbing on the springs. With less the oilpan may becom an issue.

another pic of the tie rod, notice the rise......

What exactly is the advantage of having the tie rod WAY BACK THERE vs. a normal high steer set up?

It's definably more protected, other than that, not sure.

I think the biggest advantage is having the tie rod out of the way and protected by the axle housing.

As a bonus, it appears that 4x4 Labs has taken the time to create proper stearing geometry and incorporated that into these arms.

Not affiliated, but very impressed with the design.

4x4 labs

Well I would assume that they do infact have correct geometry. But a normal high steer set up also has that. No offence, I am just curious as to the reason they made that particular set up. Here is my high steer set up.

That tab you see on the tie rod and the pumpkin is for the hydrolic assist.
