Well, at least I will need some hinges painted once they arrive. I am going to be getting some take apart hinges (ordered today) from ih8mud member mybluetoy. I will be needing to paint them Dodge Viper Red color code PRN and possible a clear coat. Obviously, this is not a very large project and I am wanting to save as much money as possible. Who do you guys use around the Jackson area for this type of application if any. I don't have the supplies to do it myself :frown: nor do I have ANY experience with automotive paint; is scares the #%$ out of me.

If it's not base/clear some automotive paint supply houses can have paint custom mixed and loaded into regular aerosol cans for small jobs like this. Obviously not the same quality as you would get taking the parts to a body shop but....it's just hinges right?

Yep, just hinges. I can even buy that particular code in an aerosol car, but the whole prep/sanding/clearcoat/buff stuff scares me.

Have JRob show you how it's done. It's not that hard to do.

X2. Jrobs truck looks great! It is JUST hinges...don't sell yourself short. I had zero experience and dismantled my truck to the tub and rattle canned the WHOLE thing.

I will keep Jrob in mine. It is not that I have never handled paint before, its just that I want it to match the rest of my new paint and want to make sure it holds up to the elements/looks professional.

Sounds like it wont be too bad though. :D

well like Jordan suggested you can get paint cans that will match. Any spray paint won't hold up as long as a true paint booth job, esp. on door hinges, where there is alot of wear but I think it would look good even if rattled canned.....in comparsion to your great paint job, the hinges are so small a little imperfection shouldn't show up unless you are up against the truck.

of course I say all this defending the fact I rattled canned my entire ride!!! for future reference, always look to do something yourself, even if it is something you haven't done, bc that's how you learn. Guys in this club have done about anything you are contemplating and for a few beers most will be happy to help you as it's an excuse to wrench on a truck!

good luck

Get them powder coated black. Powder coat is durable so it will hold up to the elements and constant movement. The black hindges will look great on a red truck and you wont have to worry about the red being a different shade. Even if you use the same color red it still might not match due to sun exposure. Colors are hard to match if the parts wernt sprayed at the same time. 9 out of 10 times the color will be noticably different.

You can do this! Get the spray paint. Get some Good primer from the place you get your paint. Sand your hinges with some 120-180 grit, clean off, prime and wet sand with some 320 grit, clean off again and spray a couple of light coats of paint and your done... If you mess up sand and respray.

yup I agree with Chris....go for it! Chris does that make us cheerleaders?:flamingo:

My personal belief is that paint is overrated.

I realize that rust will probably not work well with your nice red Cruiser.

Well, when you put it like that, it sounds easy.

Ok, I'll go for it.

Thank Todd. Just ordered the paint yesterday. After I put down a few coats of paint, I need to sand/buff the paint correct? From what I have read, after paint, I need to wet sand with 600, use rubbing compound, then polish/wax. Does that sound about right? Any pointers on what rubbing compound/polish/wax I need?

If your just doing hinges don't worry about buffing or polishing they should be pretty shinny with just a couple coats of paint. You are using rattle can right?

Yeah, the hinges are also came primed and ready to paint. So I guess all I need to do is clean thoroughly and paint?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I painted them, and went ahead and did a clear coat because they didnt match completely. They turned out great too. These hinges are awesome btw.:D
