Okay fellers, a week ago I bought my "new" 1992 Fj80 with 114k miles on it. No lift, everything's stock except it has 16" FZJ wheels. The guy I bought it from had supposedly been having his local Toyota dealer service it every 2500 miles. So far all I know is wrong with it is it needs new u-joints.

What I want to know is, what do I need to do to it as far as maintenance, what kind of priority ("do it NOW" vs. "it can wait a few weeks/months"), guesstimate on what the parts cost, and how long each job will take a mechanically challenged guy with zero Cruiser experience to do each job.

Birf rebuild - Can somebody point me to the DVD I've seen mentioned here?

Brake job?

Drain/refill transfer case and front/rear diffs?

Drain/fill transmission?

More?

Which one first?

THANKS in advance!

First congratulations on the new truck! :flipoff2: Where in Texas you....it's a big state. :D First things I did were to join the TLCA and LSLC our local TLCA chapter. Both were excelent choices...as far as the rig...

I personally changed the fluids first thing along with a simple tune up. Fairly simple and a good intro "getting to know" your cruiser. Oil, filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, ect.

As far as what on your list to do first would need to be answered by you...are the birfs leaking? Or do they seem healthy? Are the brakes bad? Tranny problems?

Look in the FAQ at the top of the page there is a TON of great info in there from PM to Mods.

I'm in Kerrville, TX - just NW of San Antonio...

I'm replacing the u-joints ASAP - front one on the front DS is pretty bad, so I figured I'll just do all of them at once.

Next I plan to replace all the fluids/filters.

Next would be at least a bearing repack and replace the brake pads/shoes. Figured I might do the birfs while I'm in there.

After that would be flush and refill the radiator.

Last would be a tune-up.

Anything else? I'm guessing that all the above will take me about 2-3 months, due to time/money constraints. Does it look like any of the above should be bumped to the front of the line? Did I miss anything important?

None of the above seem to "need" to be done, other than the u-joints, but since it's new I want to make sure I know EXACTLY when and how each thing was done last.

I will check out the FAQ sometime this week. Doesn't seem to work on my old PC at home.

I would put a high priority on the cooling system...right after the stuff you know is bad.

I also would not wait any longer than financially necessary to get things like brake, diff, transfer and PS fluid flushed/changed. Oil and filter go without saying.

The FAQ will warn you about the PHH and starter contacts - both items can strand you and even destroy the rig in a worst case scenario.

I left you a PM.

The FAQ has a step by step front axle rebuild in the maintenance section.

Need to baseline all the fluids. Obviously, chnge diff fluids as part of axle rebuilds.

Radiator Flush, replace Tstat

Recommend synthetic gear oil in the Tcase due to the heat. I use synthetic in the Tcase, and front and rear diffs.

Change the Tranny fluid either via multiple drain and fills or a fluid exchange (Don't do a Flush)

Sparks plus, rotor, wires, distributor cap and timing

Rebuild rear axle (Piece of cake compared to front) about a 2 hour job to do the rear.

T. stat! and test the fan clutch when the engine is fully warmed up, or just replace it. Is the stock radiator still in there? I would check on that for sure. The cooling system is the first thing and the most important IMO cause it will leave you stranded if something fails. Also check the output of the alternator

Anyone know if the PHH is really a PHH on the 3FE? or is it easier? Is the PHH just Pesky on the 1FZ's?

Can somebody educate me?... What is a "PHH"?

I see now he has a '92. Not a PHH after all.... :)

If you go the the FAQ in this section there is an acronym section and such. You'll find the lingo there.PHH= Pesky Heater Hose, don't think it applies to our 3FE engines tho.
