I love Jeep (but I want an FJ80 on the side)

Psst... Get a 60 series.

Yup, crazy is a good word to describe it. 360-420km per tank is already better than my M5's 340km per tank average! Plus, my car needs Super Supreme.

That was a crazy accident, I actually got stuck in the traffic from it and passed the carnage. Man you two where lucky you got out with out injures.

My 97 LX450 with full maintinence done including clean and flow of the Inj. with 315/75R16 gets 360-420kms per tank on the hwy I can squeak just over 520kms. My rolling average fuel economy *not* corrected for the 10% bigger tires is 18l/100kms mostly city driving to and from work. I have seen 13.8L/100kms on a all hwy tank.....once.

Figured the Waggy would out tow the 80. I'd baselined that engine over the years and had it running like a top just before the accident. Missing every feature you mentioned but I agree that I think the 80 would be better in the daily driver capacity I'm looking for.

Waggy will out tow the 80, has more interior room, power tailgate glass, elegant shag carpet and plush leather (?) seats that are so wide you can indulge your love of fast food and spray cheez until your heart stops.

80 does everything else better. My 81 Waggy had the 360, TF 727 and the preferred green/plastic wood on pumpkin interior.

Was waiting for someone to catch that . Flame away fockers, I can take it :flipoff2:. (thanks for the info, too)

Not to bust your balls but you already have a cruiser right there..... the Peg Peregos were modeled after FJ40's land cruisers not jeeps. :flipoff2:

Come over Bob......leave the darkside.

You know the 80 has 2 back seats. The third row seats might solve the kiddie seating issues, then it will be "he pulled my hair:crybaby:.

Lots of Cruisers in the LML.....but I am guessing you already know that.

First off, thanks for all the replies. Keep them coming.

Second, I was taught that, if I requested assistance, I should always respond or say 'thanks' so that's why you see me replying to so many of you (not trying to pad my post).

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of the 80 as not just a road-trip vehicle but also a daily driver. Don't know if I can actually sell my E39 M5 (it was my dream car) but I guess that's a whole different topic. I will be actively looking for another Wagoneer that I can build or find restored - the 80 is to fill the months/years I anticipate this may take, keeping our family safe and able to explore the less beaten path.

As for towing, I'm only curious about that for taking stuff to the dump/recycling yards. We have made a decision to never tow a travel trailer again. The idea is too uncomfortable for my wife and, freak accident or not, I'm not willing to put my family at risk. Some of you may disagree and say the chances are slim but to each their own.

Thanks again for the replies. I'm learning something new with each one so keep them coming.

Towed plenty with my '94. Years of doing it with my scout troop trailer. 4000 lbs loaded trailer. Do have electric brakes on it and controller in the cruiser. Used weight distribution hitch initially, although the owners manual does say not to use one (many threads on Mud about that one). I switched to Airlift airbags in the coils and have Old Man Emu heavy coils front and rear for all the 'stuff' in my sig line on the truck. Love the airbags.

While I set no land speed records going uphill with that trailer and the cruiser, I always got there! Towing my little M101CDN now is a breeze.

Is anyone local have time to meet and help push me over the edge on buying an 80? If you're running 33s with/without a lift even better. Thanks.

1. The FZJ has a more powerful engine, and the late-95+ flavors have a larger transmission (debatable about which is better)

2. Black is available, however it is rare and after all these years not many of them are in great shape. The other colors hide scratches/dent way better.

3. No idea about the LATCH anchors

4. No idea about how many baby seats will fit in the back.

5. I am getting 290-340 miles per tank. 85 or 87 grade, whatever the cheapest grade available at the Conoco. When I fill, I put in between 18 and 22 gallons into the 25 gallon tank (about 4 gallons is meant as reserce relative to when the gas tank light comes on). I get 14-16 mpg every tank with 265/75/16 tires and 2.5" lift.

the 93-94 FZJ were the ones with the A442F that is the more favored transmission verses the 95+ which uses the A343 found in a 4runner. and i think the HDJ81 uses the A442F

The 80 will easily handle 4 cars seats.

We have triplet boys (3 years old) and an 8 year old daughter. The 80 IS the only 4x4 out there that can handle a large family. The seats are set 3 across the middle and one in the back. The extra rear seat is removed for storage space.

I don't think 80s came with LATCH. At least my '94 does not. We use Radian car seats with the standard belts and no issues.

The 1FZ is a dog. FWIW, I bought my locked 80, did an engine swap to a vortec 5.3l and now have a highly capable v8 powered, solid axle equipped rig that will outwheel any jeep product currently made, and this is coming from a guy who sold his '85 CJ7 crawler that was on 42 in tires.

Coastal Cruisers meets Thursday 11 October... Lots of 80/81 series there...

My '97 does NOT have latches in the back seat for car seats. Wish it did.

If you don't mind saving me the search and hours reading posts, why is the A442F the better transmission?

We use Radian car seats with the standard belts and no issues.

We were looking at those for my wife's JKU since we regularly have our two kids plus one of their friends or our niece. Currently using two Britax on the sides and one seat booster in the middle but I worry about the kid on the booster hitting their head against the other two seats in an accident. From what I've read and you've written, having three full protection seats fit across the second row is ideal.

Already had a work engagement this evening otherwise this would've been ideal. What time do these typically end? Reading the post for the meet it looks like this one is scheduled to end early.
