I own a photography studio and a tech business, do you have any skills in network administration? I posted this on fb but I think it merits a mention here, others know you better than I so may be able to chime in more.

Don't forget photography & expeditionary skills. Actually am thinking about starting a small trial business later this year doing photographic boat tours on the Harrison River. I know a lot of pro photographers that have the money & desire to get to offbeat locations but no knowledge on where to go or how to get there. Am open to a chat over a beer sometime!

I don't know about that one, besides, I installed the A/V systems in Nav Canada and saw the environment they work in, beyond boring. All they do is stare at a screen with little dots on it and try to move the dots around so they don't crash - kind of like an old Atari game, only even more boring.

Peter, Glenn, Martin, Jeff, thanks guys, I'm currently looking into all those options and trying to decide which route to go.
I guess the biggest problem I have is just trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :D
My issue has always been that I have too many interest and skills in too many fields, "jack-a$$ of all trades" :D . My previous job allowed me to explore a good deal of them and challanged those skills, and when it did not, it usually offered me a flexible enough schedule so I can do something else. I was actually very lucky to have as much freedom as I did and the ability to do what I used to. Now I am afraid I will lose that and not find a job that will either challange me in all those fields or allow me to have "side hobbies" that will fill in the blanks.
In the end I am more focused on job satisfaction, a nice big pay is a huge bonus but it is not what drives and motivates me.

I know, I'm being difficult, I just want to find something that will allow me to do everything I'm good at, and pay me for it.

OH oh oh...one more. My sister owns property in Belize (brother inlaw is from there). We could start in tourism. Jungle tours with the cruisers, buy a boat and offer tours to the cayes...

So Mat, whatever happened to this FJ bumper project? I, along with a lot of other people on the blue forums were keenly interested in this, yet it just died with no word, plus the original thread is locked. If that isn't a potential opportunity I don't know what is.
 
That is still ongoing. That project took a little more of a learning curve on solidworks than I expected and I had to teach myself how to use the program better before I got back into it. Now the design is almost finished and I think I can start producing it.
The big issue with the FJ Cruiser bumper is that it is like nothing else out there for the truck right now. It is built tougher and stronger than the other options (weights a little more) and requires more part to fabricate. It is more expensive also. I would have to be able to get an order of 3 to help stay competitive.
I have been working on it slowly, it is not dead to me. Shipping would likely kill that deal for anyone not local though.

Keep in mind, it als requires the cutting of the frame, and it does gain about 6" from the factory setup with the trailer hitch.

You mentioned in the other thread that the business side of business isn't your strong suit, well I think your statement above illustrates something. People want stuff that is unique; that is what sells. You saw yourself on the blue forums that a number of people were keenly interested in the bumper, but with no updates on it of course interest waned.

I think you could get 3 confirmed orders if you had a fitted one to demonstrate.

I doubt that - the unique nature of the product, combined with what it delivers in terms of performance is a huge draw for buyers. People will spend the time and effort to buy unique things, just look at the stupid time & money I spent to get my african safari trailer!

Cutting the frame is a big minus in my books for public sales, this means it's not a simple bolt-on part and thus a headache and warranty/safety concern for non-local buyers. Is it primarily for rear departure angle reasons? hitch? Can you redesign to accommodate no frame cutting?

YES! I have been keenly interested in it from the start and I know others that would be too. The other thread is locked so couldn't comment in there, but if you want to follow up start a new thread. Oh and one final note, you might consider removing the technical images if you want to sell it, it doesn't take much for someone to steal and idea.
 
I would not be too worried about the frame cutting. The 4x4labs bumper and few others for the 80 series require cutting of the frame and cross member. Sure some do not want to do this but most do not care. It increases the departure angle greatly on the back of the 80 and I have never heard of any negatives about doing that in the hundreds of bumpers I'm sure they have sold.

If some one is scared or has other reasons for not wanting to cut the frame that fine there are other bumpers out there for them. I would not change the design, that is one feature that will and does set yours apart and makes it unique.
 
cutting the frame is a must for that design to work, otherwise it is like everyone else's bumper. It is the only way to get the departure angle and a trailer hitch receiver to work together.

As for theft of the idea, go ahead, the amount of time it takes to measure everything so it actually fits is ridiculous, I know, I spent it on Drew's bumper, I did not make anything on that build. The drawing can give you an overall design idea with I don't mind other's stealing, it will happen sooner or later anyways, but the really good parts that make mine way different from everyone else are not even visible in those shots :D

I'll have it finished up very soon and bring it back from the dead.

You mean Drew didn't pay you cost plus? ;)That's how we always do it with renovations. You never know the exact cost until you start opening things up. Until then we call it a guestimate.
 
I do not think Matt would 'flourish' well in a toe-the-line government job - his peers would not like him because he would be too creative and productive, attributes that are not well appreciated in that work ethic -
