The I.D. plate on my FJ40 is under a nice coat of rubberized aerosol undercoating. Obviously I cant read the plate....I took it off and tried to clean it with Dawn Power Dissolver (Great paint remover)...However it didnt budge the undercoating...Any ideas of how to remove the coating? What do I do If I can't? Is this the official Vin Plate?

You should also be able to find the VIN/frame number on your frame.

Okay - I can find the engine # and the frame #...The plate that is supposed to be one the drivers door jamb is gone however....that only leaves me with the id plate off the passenger side firewall that is covered in undercoating....
Basically other than a title showing the vin, I have the frame # but no other vin/id plate on the vehicle...I would think thats not good...? Anything I can do about it???

On a 1965 there is no ID plate on the driver's door. They started doing that in 1968.
Is this for your vehicle registration?
For my 1966 the frame number by the bumper was proof enough for the police officer sent by the Florida DMV to verify my VIN...

I don't need it for registration....I've already gotten the title and registration transferred to me...I'm just used to a vin/chassis plate being on a vehicle and when it isnt its usually a concern (for me anyway 
)...But with the title and the frame number I see I should be okay....Just getting used to the new ride...Thanks for the help...

Try WD40 that might help. Brake fluid might work but it would take the paint of the VIN plate too. Oil might make it soft. I've seen it happen in bed liners before.
wd40 migth work but it will take paint off also. It goes underneath the paint to the metal and in doing so lifts the paint.

Even if you get the under coating off your plate may look like the first pic. It should look like the second pic.

OK...Brake fluid softened the undercoating enough that I could use a popsicle stick to move
most of it off....I then used steel wool to get the rest....It nicely left some black in the engraved parts so It would be legible....
So the engine # matches and of course the frame # does as well.....despite the PO riveting through the #...

something doesn't smell right
, I've got tags and frames that are only a few digits off that could be concealed with the same amount of rivots.as long as it's registered, no biggee

It smells better than it looks...
..The VIN #30720 on the title matches the actual frame #30720 so one would have to believe the # 30720 would have been on this plate...

And there isn't much point in a rivet through the FJ40 part of the number, it says FJ40 at the top of the plate, one of my FJ45's says FJ45 at the top and FJ40 is on the frame number... but thats a later VIN plate.
Drilling holes through an id plate is daft though.
Since your engine numbers match, maybe the PO brought the ID plate over to this frame when he did a possible engine swap a long time ago in a garage far far away....

that came out great! im going to try that for sure on mine. my po sprayed rattlecan bedliner over mine. thanks!
