My 2004 LX470 has nearly 120k miles on it and 5k miles or so ago I began to hear an intermittent chirping / screeching sound coming from the front passenger foot well area when the HVAC fan / blower was on and the noise has become more frequent since, although still intermittent. Below are some pictures of the referenced area. What is going on and how can it be fixed? Thanks!
Hard to judge just what's going on from your description of the noise, but it's possible that you have something stuck in the fan itself. It's not uncommon for debris to find its way down in there.
In your first picture, the round black assembly is the fan and motor. Unclip the plug with the blue and white wires coming out of it, and then unscrew the 3 or 4 screws holding it to the bottom of the duct. The assembly will usually pop free under it's own weight (and it's a little heavy), so don't have your head right under it as you're taking the screws out. Use one hand to support it as you remove them.
Pull it out and give it a once over - anything in there will be readily apparent.
So I removed the blower motor, but it was clean with no debris therein, as shown by the attached picture. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what might be causing the noise I hear? Thank you!
Its possible that the fan motor/bearings are going out, making the noise. Is there any way you can power the fan while out of the duct to check?
I don't recommend hooking up the plug and running the fan while it's unscrewed from the housing (just for safety reasons), but finding a way to power it while unhooked would probably be the fastest way to confirm/rule out the fan as the source of the noise...
You need to isolate the problem before you go throwing money at it, but if you confirm that it's the fan assembly PM CDan or Beno. They are the 'Mud parts guys and give a discount to mud members for OEM stuff. They work at American Toyota in NM.
