How will a 22R run w/o a temp sensor?

Symptoms: Runs but will not rev, or rev high. IOWs as soon as you let off accelerator the engine comes down with it. Won't rev free.

EGR is blowing VERY hard, sounds like a knock in the carb. I isolated the breather from the carb and found where the sound was coming from. I then pulled the vac to the diaphragm switch (I guess for the EGR control) and the noise stopped.

Revving the motor, the barrel that's closest to the head closes as rpms rise. The passenger side barrel is fully open at all times.

History: I have no idea of the heads condition. I am attempting a 20/22r Hybrid swap, and the 20R intake manni has not got the provision for one sensor. I am assuming the sensor is the temp sensor (NOT the gauge temp sensor) b/c I can't find NOTHING in the book I have, and my computer's acting up. Can't find a sensor diagram

Also: Today I adjusted the vales. Just prior to this it was backfiring assisted and @ the middle of the RPM range. The backfiring has since decreased with me adjusting the vales but not entirely diapered.

Truck is a 84 4WD, AC. To the best of my knowledge not a Cali emissions. STD Federal I think.

ran great before I decided to do this stupid thing....

what role does the water temp sensor play in the carburetor?

Can I put the sensor on the bung of the thermostat housing? Kinda on the wrong side(of the t-stat), and in a high flow area...but I think that'll be my only choice...

if the weather holds I'll check the compression again.

with the back fire and no rev, thats timing. is this the same engine you had a timing issue with before?

that sensor is not critical for proper operation.

try buying new timing chain kit.
