how to read computer codes on '01 4R

Can someone tell me how to read the computer codes on my '01 4Runner? Searching several variations only found threads where folks were discussing what to do after reading them. I see a diagnotics port right on top of the engine. I'm sure it involves jumpering two of the terminals and counting the qty of check engine flashes. TIA

I think you have to buy a code reader thingy, OBD 3 or 4 now..... I don't think they are like the older trucks where you just jump the wires and the codes flash out on the check engine light.... HTH
