How to get a Fuel Gauge working again?

I'm about ready to tackle a fuel gauge that isn't working, and would love to hear about anyone else's experience if applicable. I have never done this before and will be "stumbling in the dark."

Last night I pulled the plug off the back of the gauge, there's a whole mess of wires coming out. I checked for corrosion and re-seated the thing. Next I'll open the tank and look at the sending unit.

I got this working last night and it was easy, just had to find it. I took out the sending unit in the process, it looked good- I'll post a pic.
The problem was a disconnected wire!
