any good writeups out there on how to build your own fridge slide? It can't be that difficult with the right / strong enough sliding rails? I have a welder and fab skills, just need some direction! :)

thanks!

Noah
This is not a good write up but it is my idea of a slide. Just finished it this week. Base is mounted to my rear drawers. the base is 2x2 angle and is bolted to the drawer system. The slide is 1x1 angle with 16g steel floor. Here are some pics
Pic 1 as it sits in the truck
Pic2 side view
Pic 3 bottom...16g looks bowed down but it is not
Drawer slides are from home depot.

A feature, IMO and FWIW, that needs to be incorporated into a fridge slide that typically isn't: A lock or hold open mechanism. Super handy when the rig is nose down...which seems like more often than not ;)

natvet, that looks really nice! do u mind me asking how much $$ you spent on it? how much are the slides at home depot and what # lb are they rated for?

I agree on the locking mechanism, but how to implement that? I am thinking something simple as a wood wedge on the rear to hold it in place might be fine, yes low tech but effective (like a door stop).

checked out that writeup, problem is that this type of setup uses the tailgate for support. I am going to be building one of my wagonracks for my truck and the slides will have to handle the full weight of the fridge. Going to look over at mcmasster carr to see if you can buy the slides.

The home depot slides are rated for 125Lb
The whole thing costs $30 for metal, $12 for latch and I think $26 for the slides.
Fridg. is about 40lbs,3 gallons water is 24lbs, cold food stuffs max 10lbs total around 70lbs fully loaded...........Just guessing........

I was going to put a small piece if metal(attatched to side rail) you just flip behind the back of the fridge when pulled all the way out.

ok, well I thought I ordered a slide unit for $220 shipped but then the order was cancelled, I guess it was the old model. ARB wants 330 bones plus shipping for their junk. I am gonna build my own. ARB slides are rated for 175 pounds so any slides that can handle that weight should work. I am going to probably use 250lb slides.

My fridge is small. I hope I won't need to carry that much weight.
I would be interested in the slides you find and the price.

Saw your post in the 80 section. I have been thinking about the same project and looking at slides just yesterday. The only lock in/out slides I have found are rated at 500lbs stationary 300lbs mobile. they are huge at 3/4in wide and 3in tall. seem way overkill for a fridge slide. The McMaster price seems pretty decent but I have not shopped for price much. They are sold in pairs with the right side being the one that locks.

The other option was to use smaller less expensive slides and use a cable latch. You could set it up to lock into any position (not that you would need to with a fridge) I could see these used in a drawer setup as well. :hhmm:

I would use a toggle clamp on the front wile closed to eliminate rattles while driving and some rubber bumpers on the back as well. I would consider this even with the accuride slides.

I hope this helps a bit. My build is still a ways off, it would be great to see what you come up with.

Nice work! That is a really easy, clean design. Good thoughts as to a few tweaks to make it even better too! Thanks guys.

Thats a good price. The 9308 is considered a 500lb slide when not used in a mobile application. When mounted in a vehicle (which the link focuses on) they are downgraded to 300lb max because of the added stress and abuse they will have to take. I would bet the radon slide would be the same. I have a set of 42" accuride going into my trailer kitchen. They are beefy. The radon have the same specs and look almost identical.

does the length specification of these units mean that they are x" long at fully compressed? meaning they should be 2x as long when pulled all the way out? I am guessing I just need to measure the bottom length of my fridge and buy a slide set that is about the same length?

never ordered these before so not sure about this stuff.

thanks for the help.

Noah

Take a look at the spec sheet for the accuride, I had this bookmarked. It may not be the same as the others though. The full extension slides pull out the same amount as their compressed length. They may even be a hair longer.

The minimum length I would do would be the length of the fridge. If you want it to come out further and have the room on the back, get longer slides. This would get you out beyond the tailgate a bit more. Im not sure what you have in mind for the rest of the design though.
