How many cranks before start?

As rumored for the 80 series, the "prestart cranking" could be in the design... to get the oil circulating prior to firing and thus reducing wear and tear on the engine.

I agree with hoser - my 4Runner friend and I came to that conclusion after an extensive sampling of about 3 or 4 Toyota products. In contrast, my old Bimmer would fire up on the first crank, and I had the unfortunate experience of not being quick enough on the clutch one morning, with it in gear, and my garage door was also not quick enough either (can you tell I was in a rush) - at any rate, no hard data, but I believe what hoser said is true.

..... From my understanding, if the starter's bad, no crank at all. ....
If the starter is turning slower than spec resulting in delayed starts it might be an indication that the starter is on it's way out.

Agreed...In my case, it turns over strong, just takes a few cranks to ignite. Sounds like this is normal for this engine.

That youtube video sounded just like mine, but with less testosterone. (or maybe that is in my head...):D

lol, you calling mine weak sounding?

Nah, just I like the bear growling sound mine makes (yeah, all of them make that same sound, but I like it cause it is mine!).;)

2000UZJ - you must have modified the exhaust?

nope, it's stock minus the resonator :grinpimp:

My 100 has the best sounding stock exhaust (minus the ticking manifolds which stop after 4-5 minutes). I plan on making one that doesn't have audio distortion or terrible quality.

don't pay attention to my ghetto "Slee" diff cover, I was so bored one day and figured it would be a fun project and see how "real" I could make it look... and the muffler was starting to have surface rust so I sanded and sprayed it. I haven't finished this project yet... obviously

when you get the spraypaint back out to finish off the rest of your rusted muffler, go ahead and put 3 or 4 coats on that diff too while you're at it! ghetto is an understatement...

just do it before anyone else sees it. :D
