I just replaced my spark plugs and was expecting the crank time to be reduced before starting. I've also replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the MAF and cleaned the TB recently.

Is it normal for these trucks to crank for ~4-5 seconds before catching? Not an alarmingly long time, but more than other vehicles I've had in the past.

Mine takes about a second. You may just be experiencing the ECU trying to learn the new stuff.

I am new to the 100 series too. And was wondering the same thing. Mine cranks about 4-5 times too, and i was thinking about full tune up.

I haven't paid attention, but I am thinking our truck fires up immediately (as in no noticeable delay or less than 1/2 sec)

My 100 is slow as well. I went from a '94 Camry to my wife's '02 RX 300 and I thought her's was slow. Then I bought the '00 LC - the spark plugs were replaced recently and still the delay. Good to hear somewhat normal.

I have the same - cranks a bit more than you would think. Just had the 90k service done and it continues. Gad to hear it's not unusual.

Mine is definitely not instant, but not overly protracted. Maybe 4 to 5.

Uggh... something new to obsess over :frown: "Honey, was that 4 or 5?... What do you mean you weren't paying attention???".

You're welcome :) Good to know I'm not alone...as long as it starts eventually!

mine starts right around 5-6 audible cranks too. i had thought this was a tad long for crank time but good to hear it's normal.

for those of you that have had your starter go out, was there a warning beforehand? like an increase in crank time?

As rumored for the 80 series, the "prestart cranking" could be in the design... to get the oil circulating prior to firing and thus reducing wear and tear on the engine.

Every landcruiser I've ever owned (outside of the diesels) took a bunch of cranks on a normal day before starting. Usually at least 4 or 5. I think this is normal for our trucks. Even when I worked for toyota, I remember all 4.7's took a bunch of cranks to start. Just back then, they cranked faster than mine does... (not sure why)

Your battery will affect how long/fast the engine cranks at start up.

This may be hard to believe, but I can actually tell if my battery is going to die soon (i.e. within a week or two), based on how the engine sounds when its cranking................true story, shocked the hell out of my dad:D

Which of you has replaced the starter contacts and which haven't?

I'm thinking slow starts could be associated with worn contacts ie: resistive contact->Voltage drop->slower speed on starter.

This might be a clue to eminent starter failure.

Unfortunately I don't know if the starter has been replaced or not. At 125k miles, I would be really pushing it if it hasn't from what I'm reading.

I wouldn't think that these two issues would be related though. From my understanding, if the starter's bad, no crank at all. It's cranking fine, just taking a few rotations before ignition.

VERY TRUE.

I went from the original 9-year-old battery to an Optima Red Top.

Crank time went from about 3 seconds to maybe 1.

I went to check
less than 1/2 sec. Sounds like 3 or 4 "thumps". Battery about 1 yr old or so.

My 98 with 135,000 on the clock starts near instantly cold with an old battery.

Edit: Ok, I've been paying attention now and it's not quite as instant as I thought, about 4-5 cranks sounds about right.

My old E39 540i is near instant.
