I'm aquiring a slightly used set of SS Irok Bias in 37x14x17 that I will be mounting on 17x8 non beadlocked wheels. I'm wondering how many golf balls it would take to balance the tires. According to the Dyna-Beads website, I need 10 oz per tire but that doesn't seem right. That's 6 or 7 golf balls! What do you guys think? I really don't want to guess and check this because I can only imagine how much fun the tires are gonna be to mount on that narrow of a wheel...

I don't have an answer to your question but my 36" IROK bias tires balanced perfectly with normal lead weights and not an insane amount either. I know that Super Swamper has issues making round tires so I may just be lucky.
 
that's 10oz per tire at the RIM....much ligher at the outside of the tire where the golf balls reside....

IMO, 4....
 
Is there a down side if you have a little extra weight in the tire? I would give it a try, if it doesn't need the extra weight you'll have some "extra" in case you end up with mud and such in the tread or stuck in the rim.
 
That's a wider tire and my experience with internal media was that it wasn't any good at balancing laterally. With a wider tire there is more of a chance to also have lateral imbalance. I started with 14oz per tire (airsoft) and then tried 24oz per tire (BBs) because I still had vibs, I thought if I had more then the weight would just even out around the tire and not cause any problems. When I put more weight in my tires the vibs got worse. My current solution was to take all the weight out of the tires and they run a lot better, not perfect but definitely not what it was before. I can drive at 70mph with minimal vibs. Do you have a way to mount and dismount yourself? I ask because you might have to pop the bead a couple of times to get the right amount of weight in it. In anycase I would start without weight and see how they do. If it's bad at least you have a starting point and can determine if adding more weight is beneficial or not. I'm not a pro but I can show you how to mount and dismount (I bought some irons/spoons) if you are interested.

I tried balancing 3 sets of 37's with BB's with mixed results.


The first set were Toyo's. They are pretty round as you know and don't require a ton of weight anyway. I used way too much with two shot glasses of BB's for them. Had slight vibes.

next were the MT/R's. Notorious for being hard to balance and not really round, vibes again with 2 shot glasses.


Then the iroks. Holy crap, biggest POS tire I had the pleasure to try and balance. Tried 1 shot glass, 2 and then 3.


It got worse before better. I am thinking the reasoning above is pretty accurate. I always though the extra weight would just go inert and not affect the tire balance. I think that line of thinking is wrong, more weight will affect the tire drastically.

really, start with the smallest amount you can with the golf balls. I would put 2 in. seriously. Then drive it. I know it's a pain, but if you want the help I will give a hand doing this. I have the tools and rigs to break one bead off to drop more in. :D

Best tire balance wise I've owned...and I think I have owned most all tires. :cheers:
 
Is there a reason you guys don't just use a fluid (like coolant) to give you dynamic balancing?
 
I balance 40" Nitto's with regular weights...(alot of them) but non the less, better than golf balls, bbs, and what ever else pple like to stuff in their tires

It might be, but I have a 6k pound truck and a highlift, makes it actually VERY easy. :D
 
VinSil, did you make a base plate for your highlift? Helps keep the side walls healthy when breaking on a narrow rim.

No but I like that setup! I've just used the offroad base in the past...spreads the load more and I haven't hurt a side wall this way. But...I dig that, I bet it takes little effort with the plate like that. :D
 
It was beyond simple to make. I made mine from scrape. I bent up the lower part first and then just welded it together putting some bolts in it to align with the holes on the HL base plate. I still haven't painted it but it does work well.

Chad, you going to be at the meeting this week?
