How Important Is It To Have Dual Batts With Winch

I think a starting battery would better operate a winch. I think a deep cycle battery would better survive extensively operating a winch.

I would disagree.

Winching is generally a short duration high amp load, the best choice is a "starting" battery designed to give up large amounts of amps fast and in turn recharge fast. By definition this is a starting battery.

The deep cycle gives up amps slow - and for a long time - and charges slow. It can go "deeper" into discharge (low voltage) and recover, again and again. That's my choice for fridge and auxilary loads.

I'm using a DIY dual battery system: My dual battery system

I can use either or both for winching via a 400 amp switch. My first choice is the starting battery, with the auxillary in reserve.

I do agree with Rusty's conclusion to the original question: Dual batteries is not very important for winching.

Cheers,

Good point, it also supports my final statment that a standard auto battery is fine for winching.
How do you use your dual battery set-up? In my Tow vehicle I have two batteries, the auxilliary battery is use for basically an accesory circuit and has an isolator which prevents draw by the vehicle electric circuits. If I need the aux to start the truck I break out the jumper cables. Thats only happened a couple of times so no real need for any kind of switches. I'm thinking I'll set my Cruiser up the same way. Fridge, winch, rock lights, etc. on the aux circuit.

here is a thought: You can run one battery until it fails, that'll cost you the cost of the battery ("X")
Or
You can run two batteries, and a dual setup. That'll cost you 2X plus the isolator/switch(es) etc. Let's call it is 3X+

Now, there is a chance you will never kill the single battery, so you might not need to spend any additional money at all.

Why not run the 1 until you see a definate need for 2, then upgrade from there?

This all applies to winching.
For a fridge, you'll want an aux. battery. Pure and simple. A starting battery is inappropriate for a fridge and a deep cycle isn't great for starting.
