So I had the horn fixed/rewired on my HJ61. Last night some moron in a white Miata badly cuts in front of me so I blow the Cruiser's horn for the 1st time and expected to hear a manly sound that makes small children cry and makes grown men reconsider their previous actions. Instead I get the worst, lamest horn I have yet to hear. In fact, my wifes Mini has a more imposing horn tone than my 5500lb Land Cruiser. I swear that I could hear the driver of the Miata laughing at my horn so I flicked the switch for my auxillary brights on the bumper, that just so happened to be a the same level as the Miata's rear window. Funny, I could see both beams coming out of his front wind shield and illuminate the car in front of him. LOL. In the end I did make my point to the Miata but I must admit that my horn was simply embarassing.

I am sure others had made this discovery or maybe horns from Japan are supposed to sound like they are taken directly from the latest Japanimation cartoon. Either way I need a new horn...what are my best options? Any experience on this one that you'd all like to share?

Much appreciated.

James

P.S. I included a pic of my wife working with the Cruiser on a site...nice to see the new truck in action and it not becoming a pavement princess.

Yeah the horn in my 40 is preatty lame also.I've found that I can yell louder then my horn so for now that's what I chose to do.Air horns, that's the fix when I get around to it.

Got the same thing with my Safari. I understand it is a Japanese thing because the Trollers in Australia don't have any complaints. I understand you can get 24 V horns from heavy equiptment suppliers running 24 like John Dear or CAT. It just hasn't been a real big problem for me. Get yourself an ARB compressor and put on a train horn. You'll have their attention then.:grinpimp: There was a discussion with Skidmark on BC4X4. Apparently there is nothing in the MVA which makes them illegal.

You needed to hear the horn on redreefers 'ol bj40............LOUD.

Nothings says "get the F*$k outta my way" like a dual caddy horn on 24 volts. At least I think thats what it was.

I have a horn that I salvaged from a '68 mustang I wrecked in my fj40, but the other stuff that makes the horn go beepbeep doesn't seem to work anymore (along with other things).
I also salvaged the neato foot operated windshield washer pump too, gotta get a reservoir back in there one of these days tho.

Princess auto/Canadian tire has lots of cheap air horns.

Cadillac horns are the best.

I would run em on 24 volts for the extra noise. Sure they might eventually fail. But really how often do you use a horn? I might giver a bleep once every 6 months.

I would get the horns in a junkyard though. Not new from GM....ouch.

Cadillac horns have to be the best sounding horns out there. Very reminiscence of a freight train.

Mine are from a wrecked '88 GMC van. Plug and play and free. They have the appropriate bellicose report that North American drivers associate with "GET THE F**K OUTTA THE WAY!" befitting a 3 ton vehicle. HTH, Greg.

Hella - they have a dual horn set up that pumps out over 120db and it gets noticed. I tried the air horn route once but the problem, especially on a truck that gets used off road, is over time mud and water gets in and it becomes this tiny whisle. Train horns are great but you need a HUGE amount of air to use that - it also is somewhat illegal (I know....details). There is a place by United Blvd in Coq - Traction, full semi and rig auto parts, I am sure they will have something you can use. Also the Hella horns come with a separe relay just for them, so you know they are outputting (and demanding) a bit of power.

I'm in full agreement on the wimpiness of the stock horns and am on the hunt for something out of an ancient Plymouth Fury or Cutlass Supreme.

Anyone ever try 2 12v horns in series so they don't blow up?
( although I like BB's theory of slowly killing a 12 v horn with a full 24...)
