Homemade snorkels anybody?

Anyone with a "stealth" solution? I ran a flex hose from the air cleaner intake back through the firewall on my International Scout.

All the cool mods seem to involve welding. I'm going to have to find a community college and take a course.

Does having your air tube pointing rearward vs. forward have any draw backs?

Well people do argue that when its facing forwards you get the ram affect cause the air is forced in, but others will say that facing rearwards is the way to go because you dont have to turn the snorkel head around when your out mudding and because 90% of 4wding is at slow speeds(the ram affect is useless) so the motor will suck in as much clean air as it need anyway. If i put a board over the snorkel head sealing it it will stall the curiser because its sealed so well.

I find it works real well for me and its looks tuff so i like it.

If you look up the comp trucks in Aus you will see that nearly all of them use the same snorkel set up as mine, so its proven that its work well if they are using it.

Thanks for all the helpful info. It looks easy enough to make if I can find that type of tubing. What is that stainless steel tubing normally used for? This info will help me track some down.

Can this be adapted to a 60? I don't feel too comfortable about drilling big holes on my daughter's 80.

I wonder if you could make a formed snorkel by shaping a styrofoam core, covering it in a fiberglass shell, then dissolving out the styrofoam?

If this works, I would try it.

Did a little looking on the intronets last night, and looks like acetone will dissolve styrofoam quite readily, but not polyester resin. Not sure if it may weaken the resin thought. Maybe add a coat of resin inside and out afterwards just incase? I've never done any fiberglass work to have first hand knowledge of whether this would be feasible.

Any surfers out there?:hhmm: I know some of them work on those resins and make molds all the time.

I like the fiberglass idea. Strong, light, "easy" to make. And if you crack it.... easy to fix. Also you can do whatever color you want.

I've been thinking that a wider, flatter snorkel would look cool on an 80.

$300+ seems a little steep for a plastic tube that looks cool. Anybody made their own? Would love to see some pics.

I don't know what minimum wage is these days, but I suspect if you contacted a temp agency you'd only have to put in 40-50 hours of work to cover the cost of a snorkel - seems like a bargain compared to some of these ideas!:hhmm: That and it would actually look cool. If your 80 is a beater, quit wasting time, run to the closest Home Deopt, grab some flexible downspout tubing, some pipe clamps, a couple tubes of silicone and be done with it!:steer:

Well, over here some people have to work for three weeks to get $300 so I am interested in homemade snorkels. The stainless steel is absolutely lovely. I have some SS tubes around so maybe I will give it a try.

Its held on by two plates which are nutserted to the underside of the goof gutter between the door seal and siliconed up so no water gets into the pillar.
Its really strong i think you would have to roll the car to bent it:eek:

Any closeup/build pics?
