this just got delivered today, I was told a rod went thru the oil pan. looked at the oil galley plug and it wasn't there. First engine I've seen that it was gone.

It should be a top priority to get it done if you haven't already.

Yikes! Yeah, generally a lack of oil is a bad thing for an engine! :eek:

There are a few common ways to fix/prevent the plug from coming out.

1.) Tap the hole, and thread a bolt into it.

2.) Use the bolt that is up and to the left of the galley plug to hold a tab that holds the pin in.


I hate seeing this kind of thing happen to 'Mud members. :frown:
 
For a while I actually had several engines in my possession that looked a lot like that. Most have gone to the scrapper by now. They had all thrown rods, taking out the camshaft, block and crank.

None of the ones I dealt with died due to oil loss however. The operator must have been ignoring some pretty obvious signs I would think for lack of lubricant to have progressed to that result.

I have dealt with about 10 engines that lost rods and blew up the block. In every one of those cases it was due to over revving the engine.

Too much stress on the rod bolts scratches them. Eventually a rod cap comes loose at speed. The rod cap bounces off the oil pan and back into the spinning crank which crams it into the camshaft and that's where everything locks up in breaks apart.


And ugly sight no matter how it happens.

Ive had 3 2f engines in the past year with a "window" in the block. We typically find a replacement for the customer.

Usually the hole is in the back, under the exhaust on number 5 or 6. I have never seen such an obvious example though, typically it's lack of maintenance like mark mentioned.
