Hmmm.... is this board dominated by 80ers?

Hi there! Yup, there are some UZJ-100 fans and wheelers in this board. You just don't hear so much about us because
1) we have no maintenance issues with it, aside from following factory recommendations
2) we're happy with the accomplished mods we have*
3) in terms of creature comforts, there's nothing much left to improve

If there's a newbie UZJ-100 owner, then we get active again in welcoming/orienteering him/her.

* we too have winches, lockers, A/T's & MTR's, 33" and 35" tyres, bullbars and Kaymar bumpers, 45 gal aux fuel tanks, supercharged V8's, GPS'es, CB's, Slee sliders, etc.

Ok, I have heard enough.

While you guy debating technical superiority/inferiority issues between the 80 and 100, my truck is working its little butt of (actually quite big), taking me and my family on extended journeys to places that not may people get to see. And more importantly bring us back home.

Just came back from a week long trip along the Sea Of Cortez where my technically “inferior” truck hauled its passengers and their cargo (self sufficient for a week, mind you. Over 80 gallon of fuel, water for consumption and shower, food, toys and etc…. I am sure that the Toyota GVWR guy is rolling in his grave.) including a 1200 lb off road camper. Doing all of this at 118 degrees going up hill in deep sand at times and AC at full throttle. No one hiccup. What a piece of S***. I tell you. I am going to have to get rid of it and get me an 80.

Bought my 99 brand new just for this porpuse with the intention to keep it for as long as I want/able to do this type of travel. Granted, I payed too much. This is what happen when the marketing guys slap some, so called, luxery option on a work truck and sell it as an up scale vehicle. Obviously, if I could choos, I would pick a 105 TD or a Patrol. But I have no choice, do I.

Concidering reliability (the most important factor when you put your life and your famaly’s in the hand of a vehicle), performance and maybe price, I see alternative.

Nice to see a fellow original owner using the vehicle out in the boonies. I hardly think a 100 is inferior.(I do, however, think that 6 lug nuts is better than 5 ). Very nice pic and I also like your trailer. Tell us more about it as well.

Hello Doron,

I reread this thread from top to your post. I couldn't find anything that related to "technical superiority/inferiority issues between the 80 and 100." There was one post saying the additional vehicle width was an issue for the author but that was it. The posts from Cruiser_Nerd and Tyler were obviously 'tongue in cheek.'

Several posts speculated the reason we don't see many on the trails yet is their initial cost and current value. But those posts were not knocking the capability of the 100s.

If you're referring to posts in other threads then, yep, there are a lot of posts that imply the IFS is less capable than the 80's solid axles. Most of those posts are pretty tame though and most of the posters would still love to have a 100 and a lot of us will probably own one some day though it will be added to a stable of other cruisers for many of us.

Tell us more about the accessories on your truck. The rack, the front and rear bumpers. We can see the Safari snorkle.... neat!.

Doron - It was probably me saying too wide for my fav trails. But no worries, you have a very nice truck and I'm guessing when my 80 dies in 15+ years, I might be looking for a 100 as well.

Guys don’t take me too seriously. I wasn’t that serious myself. Just trying to get the point across which is, vehicles are just vehicles. What we do with them and where they take us is what’s important.

Don’t get me wrong. If I came across the funds that made the 100 affordable for me back in 99 a couple of years later. I would be driving an 80 for sure.

Yes the safari snorkel came after I have found a small lake in the air box as a result of very exciting river crossing. Let see, in addition to the snorkel I have added the following:

ARB front bumper with HS 9500 winch (saved my bacon few times) and driving lights

Rear TJM bumper with tire carrier that I modified to accept 315/75-16 and moved the spare more towards the center of the vehicle.

ARB roof rack

The usual ARB suspension mod and front diff drop. Currently I am swapping the 864 rear with 863 + airlift 1000 (air bladder). Hopefully it will allow more load carrying flexibility

Dual batteries

43 gallon aux fuel tank.

Onboard compressor

The usual Nav and Com Equipment

As far as the trailer, we needed to shorten the time of camp set-up and tare-down in addition for the need to ease up on the GVWR of the truck. The few Australian and South African off road trailers that are marketed in the US are not cutting it for us. They are either too large/heavy or can’t accommodate 4 people and all are too expensive. So… I decided to make my own. It use aluminum frame and sheet metal and a Colman tent that I butchered. With 235/75-15 tires and (useless) rubber torsion suspension it came out at 600 lb. I managed to load 600 lb on it. 1200 lb of trailer behind you in the real rough stuff is still too much so I need to find a way to limit it to 1000 lb. The concept works good for us. I just need to use more robust hardware and come up with new suspension. Trailing arms or asymmetric cross arms haven’t decided yet. When I am done with this prototype I might make a couple units and try to market them but this is for another time/place.

I send one reply that the 80's RULES. Okay, okay, I admit, if I had the money to buy a brandnew LC 100 2003 model, I would do it and I would take that rig in the woods and on the stones.

Nothing would happen to her and I would have finally all the luxury that I was dreaming about.

BUT, I don't have the money !!

Doron, your rig looks REAL nice with the goodies on it...rack and snorkel and bullbar and such...showin' all the folks around your town what a LandCruiser should really look like and be used for I'm sure... Good on ya!

And to you 80 series dudes sayin' it's too expensive to move on to the newer series...

OK, thanks. I'm trying to do a decent OBA and it's the project from hell. All alternatives are being evaluated. Bill (photoman) and George S. have the systems that are best for me. My Cruiser doesn't have a promenade deck like Bill's and George welds up nifty solutions that are waaaaay past my capabilities and resources.

So, I keep looking.... and looking...
