I havent even started on mine yet and I am already scared.

They are the regular fine spline birfields and can be reused in the disc knuckles, just check the length if you are going to use different free wheels.

Ok I'm going to go look at used axles and wanted to know what could be considered a fj60 axle. I had a few people say mini trucks. So I know the 80-90 land cruiser works. What else? Here are some models I have in this parts finder directory as toyota models but I'm not sure if they're considered to be a fj60 axle:
  • Pickup (I assume yes, is this a straight swap/Are these considered the mini truck?/Would this axle be considered a fj60 axle?)
  • t100 (assume no since its 93+)
  • 4runner (assume no since i saw some people swap to fj60 axle)

Please let me know if I missed any others that I should consider for a donor.

Mini trucks are the straight axle models including early 4runners. The T100 was an IFS truck, and the only thing that you may be able to use are the rotors for 4 wheel disk setup and the calipers.

do yow know how to remove the handbrake shoes????? i cant seem to find it anywhere. thanks

What part are you having problems with Brad?

Separating the driveshaft/propeller shaft from those 4 studs can be difficult.

It can pay to remove the grease nipple to allow the grease to escape more easily as you compress the slip-joint.

A mini-crowbar under the flange (to separate it from the drum works well for me.

And the nut can be difficult to unstake and remove.

PS. You don't really have to drain the oil .... Just park on a gradient with the nose of your Land Cruiser on the downside.

PPS. And have it in gear (with the front hubs locked) and wheels well chocked to stop it rolling away of course - because you have no handbrake to hold it

PPPS. Make sure there's no "drive load" on the driveshaft while you're trying to uncouple it from the brake drum too. So if it's in gear (to hold it from moving on a slope), it may pay to chock only the front wheels and have a rear one jacked off the ground (on an axle stand) to achieve this "no load".

It took several weeks of looking for knuckles but I finally found some and ordered them yesterday. When I was leaving for work this morning there was a huge box on my porch. I was going to stop and grab and open the box... I had to stop myself though because I didn't want to use sick time at work. I'll have to wait Til tonight to open it and check out my new parts.

Do any of you get giddy when new stuff comes?

I love coming home to new parts. I work away 4 weeks at a time so I usually come home to a nice pile of parts that I've ordered while away.

Thanks. But I need to know how to detach the handbrake cable from the shoes. I've taken everything else off.

I still don't understand the problem. (The cable isn't attached directly to the shoes.)

There is a C-clip involved in securing the cable sheathing into backing plate though.

And further C-clips in securing the levers to the shoes.

I'm confused about something on knuckles for disc conversion. Do they have to be 79-85? I'm still having a hard time finding some :(

I've seen some people say the knuckle is the same for 80-90? Any help is appreciated.

ok my news lately is that I have almost all the fj60 parts needed to do a disc swap. But one question is, are steering arms interchangable between LHD and RHD models?

Next question is does anyone have an extra left side (LHD drivers side, RHD Pass side) steering arm from a 60 they can sell me? I have everything else.

Can anyone confirm if LHD and RHD steering arms are intercompatible? I'd like to know before I buy more of them...And I've tried looking around for a resource that confirms it or not so if anyone knows a good resource to check intercompatibility like this for RHD/LHD I'd love to know it.

Hi Guys, I'm still chugging away on my cruiser and had a question that I need help on. I'm painting the knuckle housing plus the other parts for the axle with some por15. I had a few paint brush mishaps and had paint go onto surfaces where the gaskets go and thus my question.

How critical is it that I have a bare metal surface for the gaskets (like knuckle housing to spindle)? With por15 on the seal surface it seems like the seal would be tighter than bare metal? I'm trying to figure if I should sand the surfaces where the gaskets go or not. If you've used por15 before you know its super thin paint (IMO).

It is not critical and sanding is generally not necessary.

But having said that, POR15 sets HARD and a paint run or glob would act like a lump in the metal. So personally I would probably just sand down "runs" or "globs" (if any) that are in the gasket/mating area.

BTW. As far as I can see "ARM, STEERING KNUCKLE" for an FJ60 are not different between left-hand-drive and right-hand-side vehicles (but are simply different between the left-hand-side and right-hand-side of any particular vehicle).
