thanks Awl_TEQ for posting those pictures up - 5th time was the charm.I'm also wondering if those GVW tags were only put on N. American market trucks, on the door pillar - I haven't noticed them on Australian truck, and your South- or Central-American truck doesn't appear to have one. I wonder if anyone from Europe or elsewhere can confirm that? I've seen a photograph of an Oz truck that had a couple of tags in the engine bay, only one of which was the VIN - I can't recall what the other one was however. Mine (from Oz) only came with a VIN tag - but then, he-he, it was missing more than a few parts when I received it! :hhmm:

Canadian only??

I haven't really ever noticed a vehicle that did not have the GVW marked on a tag somewhere, not that I always checked for one. I was born in the US but have spent all my adult life as a Canadian so I ask you - is it just a Canadian regulation that stipulates GVW be marked on vehicles? Or perhaps a chronological issue with mine being a 78 and some of the others here being older and before the regulation came into effect? Just for kicks I checked all the other vehicles in my possession. These are all late model, 2008,2003 and 2007

My Harley (imported from the US last year). This tag is the one Transport Canada made me add to the bike in order to get plates for it. (I know it's blurry but it has the GVW on it)

My US models have the door pillar tag with GVW, but my Aussie specs don't have it. They have a second firewall plate for Aussie compliance that lists manufacture date, gvw, and other goodies. The compliance plate is not produced by toyota, I don't believe, as it is stamped on very flimsy material, probably aluminum, with no ink/paint, not nearly as nice as the other firewall plate or the canada plate above or the door pillar plate on my us spec.

It would appear that the GVW tag on the door pillar is something unique to Can/US market vehicles.

I was surprised to read about Transport Canada insisting on a GVW tag for your Harley Awl_TEQ - I think that must be because of the recent date of manufacture. I had to pass my truck by transport Canada as well about 8 months ago, however (perhaps) since mine is more than 25 years old, they only needed to see the VIN number in two places, which was no problem since I had the number on both the VIN tag and the chassis. I was thinking that it was a really good thing that my chassis was in good shape up at the front of the rail and the chassis number was/is clearly visible.

Lots of 40's I have seen have had various front end 'incidents' , custom work done with fronts cages/bumpers and so on, which result in the chassis number location being damaged or welded over, etc. If I were buying another truck like that from OZ or elsewhere, I would insist to see photos of a clear chassis number (and VIN tag on the firewall) from the seller before commiting any money.

I recently registered and titled my truck here in Massachusetts, and the Registry of Motor Vehicles had trouble putting my VIN number in the system, since they went to 16 digits here in 1980 (as they did in Canada). To get my VIN into the system, the woman at the registry office put it in as a '1980' to fool the computer into accepting the registration. Trouble was, at some other part of the system, where the title document gets done, they didn't make the switch back so when my title showed up in the mail a week or so later it said '1980'. I went back down to the office to explain the problem - and they understood exactly what had happened, however they wanted to do another visual inspection of my VIN. The state inspector happened to be there, and he went out and had a look at my truck.

My VIN was fine, however nowhere on it does it state the date of manufacture, so the inspector got his knickers in a twist as I had no tag showing that information. In the end I convinced him (they also had my Australian reg. document scanned on file which showed the date) but it was a hassle and stressed me out a bit. I could have let it ride with the title saying '1980' but I didn't want any problems down the line if I ever was to sell the truck, with the title not maching the year (there were no 1980 HJ47's), so I insisted they change it. I now have the new and correct title.
