Hey guys I now own a 1985 Hilux with a 5speed and a 22R. I would like to update the engine with a 22RE fuel delievery system to it. The transmission is what im wondering aboot right now though.

The tranny seems to feel like a slushbucket. I hear many guys say that even a good rebuild (Marlin) will help but that its still not a real positive feel tranny. Would a FJ40 4speed or FJ60 5 speed be a good swap or any other ideas? Also how much more crossmember work would it take to run dual x-fer's on it with a landcruiser tranny?

The mini truck/Hilux trannys are pretty good, I've driven a newly rebuilt one and one of my dads with 250k miles on it, and the rebuild is wayyyyyy tighter.

Doing a fuel injection swap is a bit of work, I would not throw in trying to adapt a 22R to a Cruiser tranny and then back to the Hilux t-case, that's just way more trouble than it's worth. I think the dual cases will bolt right in, but the second case will hang out the rear a bit more.... and you'll need new drive shafts.

I honestly don't think it's possible to adapt a Cruiser 4-speed to a 22R/RE engine, and it's not worth the trouble. The input shaft is very different, the bellhousing is totally different, you'd have to custom build a bellhousing AND a clutch.

You should have a G-series tranny now, probably a G52. What you could/should do is upgrade to the W-series tranny, such as a W56. This is the tranny that they put behind the 22RE.

With decent bearings and synchos, these trannys shift very smoothly and crisp.

yeah, I second KLF
dont think you can use a cruizer trans in a truck.
your best best is to spend 100 bucks on a rebuild kit from Alltrans Parts in Portland, OR

and rebuild your self a G52 5 speed.

if you want to krwal then i suggest a top shift L 43 four speed.

thanks, i have no idea with regards to a cruiser output shaft. Thanks for the info. The L43 is a better choice than my G 52 for crawling tho? I called marlin and they said they could make the G 52 a very tight tranny.... which is what i want along with good crawling ability.

MArlin can set you up with a very stout G52.
The benifit of a early L43 is its low geared, naturally being a four speed, right out of the factory.
If you have the $$ to buy a tricked out G52 from Marlin, I would do it.
If you havent rebuilt a tranny before, now is not a good time to learn what an output shaft is. :flipoff2: Get a Marlin. I Would imagine there is a warranty too.

lol I know what an output shaft is, just didnt know the differences between and cruisers and mini truck!

I like the sound of a Marlin G52 souped up because I still use the rig as a partial daily driver.
