Hi,
I'm new to this forum but have often read this (and other) forum for years. I have owned a 1982 FJ40 (original condition with ~65K miles) since 2001. This was my FJ40 (http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/2001.html) in 2001 and no, the girl didn't come with the truck, unfortunately
I don't drive it that much, have probably put <5k on it in all those years, but being in the midwest it has of course begun to show rust.
Anyway, I am currently replacing the intake/exhaust manifold due to (incorrectly) diagnosed crack - which turned out to be a bad gasket. In doing so I cracked the heat shield that mounts between the carburetor and the manifold. It appears to be some kind of plastic (bakelite?) and the manifold side is plated with what looks to be aluminum. It is holding together due to the plating, and the break is down the middle so the shield is still held in place with a bolt on each side of the crack so I am not sweating it, but wondered if someone might recommend a high temp epoxy to insure it stays intact? Attached is a pic of the shield and I circled in red where the crack is. It is hard to see here as this was before I cleaned it up and the dirt is hiding it as well as the fact that the plating really holds it together pretty well.
On a different topic, while doing the manifold replacement (the most complicated thing I personally have ever attempted on any vehicle) I have been constantly frustrated with going to the exploded view diagrams of various components and seeing a Toyota part number for screw and then when I find that part number there is no information on what the screw is. Is there either a set of exploded view diagrams that show the actual size of the screws, or a cross reference that tells what a given Toyota part number is (ie, 91032-10001 is a M10 1.23 25mm - these are made up numbers but gives the idea). I have been de-rusting (evapo-rust works a treat!) the bolts if I can but some just need to be replaced due to be being rounded/stripped. There are a couple on the air intake that are just missing. I ordered some nuts from Toyota at $1.87 apiece but it sure would be nice to just get the JIS screw/stud/nut I need at a more reasonable price from a fastener vendor.
There is a ton of great information here, thanks to all those who contribute!
Thanks,
-Tom
