Hi all.

92, Std Cab, 4x4. 2.4L. Std tranny. 167k miles.

My truck has developed a high pitched squeal when idling only. Sounds like, if you have ever heard, an industrial fire alarm going off. Immediately goes away if I rev past 1k rpm. Does not do it driving.

No overheating and no driving issues.

Water pump?

It is not a belt squeal-more like a ringing.

Ideas??

Thanks all.

serpentine belt idler pulley bearing? When you speed up there is enough other noise to drown it out?

Since its a 92- I'm gonna move it into the earlier forum to see if it might get you some more suggestions. Good luck, Luke

No serpentine belt on the 22RE.

It's very likely the idler pulley for the power steering belt. There's a bearing in the middle of the pulley that you can pop out and replace. Unfortunately, Toyota doesn't sell just the bearing, you have to buy the entire pulley. But NAPA can match the bearing. It's so common I carry a spare with me all the time.

Old mechanic's trick I learned: take a long extension bar and put one end on the bone just in front of your ear. Use the other end as a probe to touch different parts of the engine. You'll know it when you find the source of the noise. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET TANGLED IN THE FAN OR OTHER MOVING PARTS

EFI?

whistle or squeal?

Check injector O rings or for vac leak;)

It is neither a whistle or squal. It is a ringing-kind of like you just left a AC/DC concert ( :

It sounds like a bell after it has rung out-if you know what I mean by an old bell.

It is a ringing.

Thanks

Crank Pulley.... ahrmonice balancer I think they call it..... It is the rubber that holds the crank pulley all together...... At least from what you are describing that is waht i would check.. You cant get a replacement under-drive pulley for $150 from lc (porbably cheaper). But yeah that is my two cents!

Man, that is a pretty wide range to look at ( :

So, all that has posted have had this type of sound from their engine? I would have never thought so i.e. I would have thought it was pretty specific.

Thanks all for the help.

Lots of things can make this type of noise. The best thing you can do is listen to it. I use a half inch wooden dowel, about 3 feet long. You will be amazed at what you can hear. Or, if you want to remove yourself from the shadetree, a mechanics stethoscope will do the same thing for more money.

OK. Will do.

I will keep one in the truck for next time.

What size? Will a 3/4 do or does it need to be smaller/larger?

It depends, a 3/4 should work just fine. The only limiting factor is the space you have to stick it in

My old 89 made this exact noise when it lost the timing chain tensioner. If this is the case, you might not want to drive it much as the tensioner and whatever came with it are floating around in your oil pan.

the fact that it goes away when the speed picks up would lend to an idler that has most load on it at idle, idlers are always opposite the drive side. does this engine have a timing belt or is it chain?
