Hi I just did my first oil change since I bought my fj40. I don't know what was in it before but I put in Castrol high mileage 10-40, then I started it and immediately got high oil pressures.I shut it off right away.
Should I let it run awhile and see what happens?any ideas?

Ps it's a 74 fj40

Hi
My Smiths mechanical oil pressure gauge tells me the oil pressure is 60psi on a full rebuilt 2F motor when started.
The pressure drops to 55 Psi once warm 75 to 80 deg C.
So I have to ask you the question
" What is high oil Pressure on your motor? "

Check the wire going to the oil pressure sender for signs of insulation break down and possible grounding to the frame.
This fault could give false readings to the oil pressure gauge.
Cheers

I know the factory gauge isn't exactly known to be reliable but before the oil change it was right in the middle? If it was actually this high would it be a problem?

FWIW - The '87 2F I had professionally rebuilt and recently installed into my '77 FJ40 has the oil pressure needle at the upper mark of the acceptable range on the OEM gauge. I asked ACC (engine installers) about that and was told that my 2F has really good oil pressure and not to worry. I trust their judgement and have not given it a second thought. After the 500 mile break-in oil change a few weeks ago, per the engine builder, I put in VR1 20W-50. I still get the same "really good" oil pressure reading on the gauge.

Note: Before the '87 2F install, the original '77 2F's oil pressure was towards the lower mark of the acceptable range. The '77 2F was tired and had significant blow-by.....Thus the engine replacement.

So that line on the gauge is the "acceptable" range?

Good question.....I didn't know what to call the area between those hash-marks, so that was the best I could come up with. :meh:

I guess it all depends on if the gauge, sending unit and other ancillary items are all in working order.....?

My oil pressure gauge always points 2/3 towards the right . After oil/filter change it points slightly higher but settles down once warmed up. Original smogged engine with 145K miles seems to burn/leak (a little) about 1.5 qt. of oil between oil changes (3K miles) resulting in slightly lower reading as I get closer to service. Did you check your oil level prior to service? 8.2 qts w/filter on mine so perhaps your oil was a bit low prior to service. Another thing I notice when I get closer to the end of oil service, my rig runs a little warmer (in the Arizona heat). I suspect it due to both, being slightly low on oil and the oil it self has lost a little viscosity. I have been driving her daily for the past 3 years and keep very close tabs on all instruments so I'm not imagining this phenomenon.
Last Saturday, I spent five hours servicing, tuning up and greasing all zerks, checking all other fluids. I also checked compression and she still has the same numbers from the first test I did upon purchase. I also keep a fuel log and milage is unchanged indicating to me all is well at 12 MPG. I don't push her past 3000 RPM but still manage to get speeding tickets Haha.

Keep driving her and learn her idiosyncrasies as you will learn what is normal and what is not.
Best of luck

Hi Terry
The photo of the oil pressure gauge you posted.
My 2F motor gives me the same reading as per your photo on the OEM cluster Gauge at 60psi .

Anybody know where the oil pressure relief valve is on the 1f? And what it looks like. (Just got back to working on it) also how would I hook up a manual oil pressure reader?

Hi Terry
To hook up a manual/ mechanical oil gauge.
Remove the existing OEM oil gauge sender.
Fit a 1/8 BSP male , female, female T fitting.
Re fit the OEM oil gauge sender to one of the female 1/8 BSP ports on the T fitting.
This now leaves 1 female 1/8 BSP female port to fit the oil pressure line on the mechanical gauge.
Be sure to use thread tape or thread sealant on the joints.
Cheers

I'm not sure where Terry is from, but here in the USA one of the female ends for the tee that Pete listed needs to have NPT threads. The 1/8th BSP male X 1/8th BSP female X 1/8th NPT female are available on line as I got one a few months ago to do a mechanical oil pressure gauge, and also keep the stock electrical gauge for my Nissan SD-22.
