Tools, I just switched to M1 15w50 from 0w40. I still have the rattle but not as much. She seems to like the thicker stuff so I will prolly keep using that. I also use the Toyota big filter.

Tools and I are both in S. Arizona...F-ing hot, so the thick oil seems to work well.

Switched to the small filter at the same oil change.

I'ver read differing opinions here about the small filter. Is this the first time you used it? You'll have to give your valued opinion on it.
I still have about 6 of the big filters in my garage.

My pressure went up quite a bit when i switched to 10w-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic from the convential stuff. Not pegged, but pretty close on the freeway, i was wondering about this also!

See, my reaction was almost opposite. I switched to 5-40 though M1 syn and my oil pressure gauge reads almost two needles away from 0 at stops which is after it's warmed up and has been driven for over one hour. My oil pressure pins the 3/4 mark at startup.

just to let you know. I plumbed a mechanical oil pressure guage into a tee at the oil press sendout (located below exhaust manifold) on my rig. The oe toyota guage sits at 2/3 while on the highway and not much below that around town. the 2/3 mark on the oe guage coresponds to 60 psi on my mechanical guage.

hmm does not match Instigators mechanical gauge, his tends to show considerably higher, might be because the location he taps off from is closer to the pump.

you may be right. bill "photoman" is helping with the issue. I Think the prob may be that the oil press guage is plumbed proximal to the solenoid on my preluber which has a 20 sec timer on it-i thought the solenoid had a one way valve but it may not (insert long explaination from photomans recent post here) -soooo the pressure reading i am getting may only represent the highest press obtained durring engine warm up in my driveway and not the press at 60mph on highway. this probably makes no sense but yes-you are right

No that made sense, you want this gauge to read current pressure not stored pressure if you are wanting to measure oil pressure, the way it sounds now you are reading stored pressure witch is a good thing to know also.

Oh btw where did you find a the metric pipe thread "T"? I would like to do some similar activities.

hmmm, have we identified another unreliable gauge here, or are these engines really that variable? I guess some of it might be oil and filter selection. One suggestion for FLcruizer is that the oil pressure is unusually high because 20w50 has exposed the fact you have some gunk in your motor partially blocking a few passages. maybe the higher viscosity oil flowed past the obstructions better. I would say that if the synth does not work, consider some auto-rx oil treatment (go to www.bobistheoilguy.com) with the caveat that I have never tried the stuff only read about it.

i am surprised to hear of anyone running with oil pressure indicating just above the zero has mark. I would panic and park my truck if that happened. Similarly, I don't think the needle has ever gone beyond the 3rd hashmark on my truck. If it went to the 4th hashmark I would panic and park it. Not saying you guys should, just that it would be totally inconsistent with my truck's habits.

I have noticed a small but distinct uptick in pressure between my old 5w/30/10w/30 mobil 1 use and rotella 0W40 full synth that I recently switched to. It is most noticable at hot idle. I used to lag 2 or 3 needle points below the 2nd hashmark after about half an hour running time. Now it takes much longer to drop below the 2nd hashmark at idle and is only one needlepoint low.

the 0w40 rotella switch has reinstated intermittant minor startup rattle. Truck had it when i got it, but the 5w30 and 10w30 mobil 1 I used completely eliminated it for a long time. this seems exactly contrary to Tools R Us experience as far as heavier viscosity causing rattle not reducing it, but consistent as to brand, so maybe something in the mobil 1 formulation eliminated start up rattle? I always use the good small filter. Never heard a bad word said about it, and one of its chief virtues imho is eliminating start up rattle.

I got a metric to npt fitting adapter kit at checkers. it cost me about $10 for several fittings that come in the bag.
concerning the oil press issue. This weekend I tried opening the preluber solenoid at 2000 rpms--this allows the oil press guage plumbed in the preluber bottle proximal to the solenoid to see whatever press is realy being experienced by the system--and it read 70psi which is what it should be at.

yep that is closer to what Instigator is seeing. I dont have a checker auto here but I will have a look in the local stores.
